Why ATIH need so much free space for consolidation process.
Hi all.
If I use use differential backup method & set consolidation settings to consolidate backup after every 6 versions & current backup with 5 versions uses about 150Gb then I should have additional 150Gb free spaces for consolidation process because this process creates copy of each backup file. Where is logic? I think consolidation process just should delet old version. my method it sould be first differential version, for full method it should be first full backup.

ok but why ATIH create copies of backups? For what? It just not needed. If something were to happen to the machine during the process (power outage, RAM corruption, bad sector) then I`ll have a lot of copies & probably 2 backups in backup section or I`ll have 1 backup & just lost free space. Nothing more. all what is needed: just delete old backup file when new one was created.

stanisluv,
To consolidate, ATI creates a temporary working file and "edits and concatenates" the content of the consolidate files into that working file. This approach allows the process to happen without jeopardizing the original files.
After this editing is complete, ATI then deletes the original files and rename the working file and the remaining files to get back to a consistent naming scheme.
It is an Acronis software principle: never delete any full and/or existing backup until a new full has been completed.
Some tools like Chain2Gen avoids this safety valve by managing the chains outside of ATI. You can do this with a command batch.

Hm, As I understand ATIH not need to create a temporary working file "edits and concatenates" the content of the consolidate files into that working file for differential method because each new diff version contains all files from all previous versions (Exclude files in 1st full version). If ATIH add files from oldest version into full backup then it`s bad way because merge could damage backup at all.

Stanisluv,
I was describing the consolidation process. The consolidation process, when selected in the backup settings, happens after ATI has created the slices.
In the differential case, the data processing might be lighter than in the incremental case, but the logic is the same and ATI will not modify/delete existing backups before successfully completing the consolidation.

Hm, different method should use different logic. I think so. Anyway thx for info.
