Why doesn't True Image 2013 recognize common NAS brands?

Thread needs solution

I see that TI2013 supports NAS devices, but the list of recognized brands is pitifully small: http://kb.acronis.com/content/23567

QNAP, Synology, Drobo, WD, Thecus, Buffalo and others are some of the leaders in the NAS field, but TI2013 only recognizes NAS devices from LaCie, Promise, Netgear and Seagate. ???

Why hasn't TI2013 been updated to recognize the most common and popular NAS devices on the market? Are there any plans to add support for the missing brands? I've used, and recommended, Acronis products for years, but I'm baffled by the very limited number of NAS brands that are supported by the latest version of True Image.

Maybe those Brands weren't willing to help sort out any problems that were found. I don't know that to be so, just offering a possible reason.

QNAP and D-Link in use here. 2012 & 2013 are working well for me. I cannot comment on the others, but no issues here thus far.

I have a Synology myself, and though I can back up to it as an external host, it doesn't appear in the NAS list. After reading about Acronis adding NAS support, it just seemed silly that only a few select brands of NAS are actually identified as such in the NAS list.

I am trying a trial version of TI2013. And unable to see my QNAP in TI on
my home network. But it can backup to mapped drives in Win7.

Are you able to suggest any ideas why the QNAP does not come up
in the "NAS connections" section in "Browse for Destination"? Same
with the "Network" section. Is your QNAP showing there

QNAP TS439 Pro Turbo

I haven't tried to browse.. I just typed in the server name and share. I'll have to look specifically at your method.

Here's my environment:
Running 3.8.1.1205
Security Settings are LOW - Accept all connection
My network Workgroup is WORKGROUP on all devices
Micorsoft Networking Service is enabled
Two users, both have full r-w permissions

I'm using a static IP outside of the DHCP range being assigned by my Netgear router. My Linksys was configured the same way. I don't map my shares, but I don't think there is anything wrong doing so. Sometimes deleting a mapped drive... then remapping using the server's IP or UNC path resolves these problems. Additionally, if the NAS doesn't appear for you, the most common reason has to do with UPnP settings on your PC or router. How this is handled varies by manufacturer. A software firewall could also cause issues.

I'll update when I have a chance.

*** My router is not broadcasting UPnP for my QNAP. Can't seem to force this. Currently the NAS appears under >Computer's Near Me >Workgroup.... in w7 it appears under Other Devices (since there is no mapping)

I use the same method for backing up: I browse to the IP or UNC name of my NAS and select the backup path just as I would when accessing a file server or other device. What I don't understand is why Acronis TI 2013 doesn't list my NAS under "NAS connections". I've attached a screen cap to illustrate.

The method I use is to type the IP or UNC name of my NAS into the file name field like this:
\\192.168.1.22\

Or you can type in the full path:
\\192.168.1.22\Backups\

Then hit <enter> and there you are. You may be prompted for credentials to access your NAS, but that depends on your setup.

Any chance that Acronis will augment the short list of recognized NAS brands beyond the small handful that is currently recognized? It would be nice if True Image 2013 supported more than a few token NAS brands after claiming it provides "NAS support":

Simple network backup
True Image 2013 automatically detects and displays your NAS device so you can backup multiple network PCs to a safe and reliable storage site.

This would be a nice feature, if it worked for any of the popular brands...

I'm running true Image 2013 on a 64bit Win8 PC and backing up to a Buffalo Terrastation III with no problems

Does your NAS show up in "NAS connections" in the "Browse for Destination" window, or do you browse to it using the IP address or UNC name (\\192.168.xxx.xxx or \\MyNASname)?

it doesn't show up in " NAS connections" it shows up in "network"

Yep, same here. I'm hoping Acronis adds the popular brands of NAS (including Buffalo) to the "NAS connections" list.

Does anyone at Acronis read these threads?

I'm guessing the lack of response means "no".

I'm kind of surprised that Acronis would tout a neat feature like NAS support and then fail to carry through on it. If "NAS support" means that Acronis can save backups to NAS, then I guess that means any network-aware backup software can claim "NAS support". It's just another buzzword to keep sales up. "Xcopy: now with NAS support!" :)

I had hoped that Acronis' "NAS support" meant that my Synology NAS (or any other popular brand of NAS) would show up in the "NAS connections" tree, but that's not the case. I guess my disappointment stems from the fact that I've bought dozens of Acronis backup licenses for workstations and servers over the past five years and have recommended Acronis software to numerous folks as a no-bull backup solution. But times change.

Maybe someone at Acronis can add support for other popular NAS brands in the "NAS connections" tree. I'll still use Acronis to back up to my network. Works fine for that. I just won't look for it under "NAS connections".

tsmith35,
I don't think the support, or lack of in this case was intentionally left out. I know on the surface that any NAS which is capable of meeting basic network protocol requirements could appear under the NAS devices heading... but Acronis is not the only software with this limitation. Symantec Back Up Exec which is an enterprise product also fails here. Would I like to see it, sure, but in the end, a click or two more and a small string gets the job done and done well.

@shadowsports Yeah, I figure it's wip. It was only an annoyance while I was setting up my backups. Copy-and-paste worked fine for me. I think I'm more irritated that Acronis advertised a nearly non-existent feature than I was by having to use the same old method for backing up to my NAS.

Maybe Acronis will take the time to flesh out the "NAS connections" placeholder for True Image 2014.
