Will not backup my external hard drive
I asked at this forum if Acronis True Image could backup one external drive to another and was told this is possible. I am using Vista on an HP Pavilion Slimline. I put my 2 TB Seagate Expansion External Drive into one USB port and a 3 TB WD Elements external drive into another port. I selected Other Backups/File backups/ and then choose the drive with the data as “source” and the empty hard drive as “destination.” Yes, both were recognized. Next I choose “full backup.” After I activated this I immediately got error messages as follows:
Failed to open (initialize) the computer
Failed to initialize the snapshot manager library (0x100005)
Tag = 0x8D5BF87C202E8715
Etc.
I did not see any way to copy and paste the error messages so this is all I have transcribed. Let me know if more is needed and tell me how to post error logs. I was planning to use Acronis to help me backup the Seagate external drive because my computer is filled and I do not have space for a bigger internal hard drive. Please help me find a way to backup the 2TB drive. Thank you.

Crescere,
Let's try to isolate the problem.
Can you do a small file backup from an internal disk to the 3TB disk? If not, to another internal disk? If not, can you do a file backup from the recovery CD to any disk? This will help us determine whether you have a hardware issue (you cannot even use the recovery CD), or a Windows software issue.
Do the same tests but this time backup files from the 2TB disk...

I tried backing up one file from my computer C drive to the blank WD drive and got the same error message. I tried backing up one file from my computer C drive to the data Seagate drive and got the same error. I only have one drive in my computer so I can not try that. I do not know what you mean by “recovery CD”. I read some of the manual and I thought that was for booting up a system. I Am only concerned about backing up data files. They consist of PDF books, pictures, videos, etc. I can move files to the WD external drive so it is not a hardware problem.

I just tried to back up a small file to a thumb drive with the same results. I have just re-booted and tried various combinations and NOTHING is being backed up. All I am getting is oeration failed, operation failed.

The recovery CD is the bootable media you *have* to produce using ATI. You have to test it to make sure you can recover a disk image when needed.
It looks like you have an issue with your ATI installation. The basic fix is to uninstall, reboot and reinstall. Try if this fixes your situation.

Pat L, thank you for your answer. I went online to the support area and one of the staff sent me a file with needed drivers. I installed them and the backup started. I wish they had included these drivers when I bought the program!
You have me wondering about what I do with the recovery CD. I did not see this in the manual. You do recall that I am just backing up data files? How do I make and use this CD? I am confused.

Another online staff told me that I do not need this bottable CD for merely backing up files. I must say that this is the first time I have actualy been helped by an online technician. Both of the people I was connected to were quite helpfull.

The technician is kind of right. You don't need the recovery CD when you can have ATI installed on your computer to restore a backup. When the backup is a disk and partition backup and your system disk is dead, there is no way you can have ATI installed so you need the recovery CD for sure.
When you want to recover files from a backup to another computer and you cannot install ATI, you will need the recovery CD.
What kind of drivers did you have to install? The SnapAPI drivers?
