Thread needs solution

What files and folders (the smallest possible amount) should I clone in win. xp to restore win. xp in the case of win. xp failure.

Move all of your data folders to another partition, keep C: as small as possible. Move your e-mail to another partition as well (web search). Then backup the entire C: partition, excluding nothing. If XP fails restore the entire partition and you're back where you were before the failure. Periodically backup the data partition any way you like, they're simple files that can be copied any number of different ways and don't really require backup software to do that, but you can backup that entire partition in one step as well.

If something goes wrong with Xp such as software or virus, you should at least have a backup of your XP drive (C).

If your hard drive fails, then it is best to have a disk option backup whereby all your partitiions on your main disk is included in the backup. This would enable you to move to a new or larger disk on the same computer.

Having just a few Windows files or the Windows folder is not adequate to fix a problem with Windows--should you have such a problem.

I assume you are using the Windows System Restore feature to create system check points. These can be slightly helpful but a full backup of your system drive is much preferred.
