Windows 7 Backup and Restore to a smaller hard drive...

Thread needs solution

Here is the problem i've been having and i can't seem to find anything on it so far.

I've created a Boot Disc and made a backup of my Windows 7 install so i could move it to my new computer. When I select it to restore it makes the System Reserved Partition smaller the 100MB so i looked up online and saw how to restore from a windows backup file and i tryed that and the same thing happened. when i tried them they wouldn't boot am i doing something wrong or is it just not possible to restore to a smaller hard drive with Windows 7?

Thanks for the help.

What version and build of TI are you using?

Have you tried restoring just the SR partition by itself (to keep the 100MB size) and then restoring the Windows 7 partition?

Do you have a standard Microsoft Windows 7 OEM or retail DVD to use for a boot repair, if necessary?

I'm using Acronis True Image Home 2010 Build#7046 I Downloaded it last night and I also downloaded the bootable discs from the site. I'm trying to restore with the boot disc. And yes I do have a Retail Win 7 disc if i do need to restore. I haven't tryed that yet i will try it today and post back.

Thanks for the help.

Hello all,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help.

Christopher,

Since you are going to transfer the system to another computer, please make sure that you are adding the necessary drivers properly, the description is available here

Also during the recovery please keep 100MB size of the System Reserved Partition (in accordance with the MudCrabs' suggestion).

If repair doesn't help, please let us know the exact error that appears at the system startup.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other questions do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.

Thank you.
