Windows XP Search inside .tib files

Thread needs solution

Hi,

So it seems that this problem is recurrent and hasn't been fixed yet. See, for example, the following knowledge base entries:

7443: Running an XP file search opens an acronis window; (http://forum.acronis.com/forum/7443)
4370: Problems with Windows Search after installing Acronis True Image (revival) (http://forum.acronis.com/forum/4370); and
9212: True Image and windows search (http://forum.acronis.com/forum/9212)

I'm using True Image Home 2010 Build 7160 (the most recent as of the date of this posting) on XP SP3. When I run a windows search, sure enough, as per 7443, I get a window asking me to locate the last volume of the backup. That's a pain. Clearly, windows search sees .tib files as something in which to search. I'd love to get rid of that window. While I'm sure some users wish to search inside their .tib archives, I don't want to. If I need to do that, I'd just as soon mount the archive as a drive and search that way. In other words, I'd love it if I could just, somewhere, tell windows search not to bother searching in .tib files. Clearly, I can't do that in windows search. The next logical place, then, for me to disable searching in archives would be in True Image itself, somewhere in "Options". Well, I can't do that either. In article 9212, Edward B suggests renaming tishell.dll and tishell32.dll so that the OS can't find it. That work-around, while graceless, does likely solve the problem; I haven't tried it. A slightly more graceful (but still graceless) way to accomplish the same thing would be, I would think, just unregistering the .dll's entirely. Poof, there goes a load of otherwise desirable functionality at the same time. So, my request to Acronis is simple: can you please - since it's now been a long long time, well over a year - fix this problem? For me, I don't care if you fix this problem by adding an option to prevent windows search from looking in .tib files entirely.

Thanks.

Christian,
I had the same problem in the 2010 version. I am now using the most current 2011 version and with XP Pro, this is no longer a problem. Other people have reported a significant number of issues with the 2011 but most of the problems reported, I do not experience.

Hi GroverH,

Thanks for the comments; I appreciate your feedback.

I purchased 2010, however, expecting a working piece of software with associated support provided for some time. I hope the folks at Acronis are up to the task. Otherwise, I will be looking elsewhere in the future.

Take care!
