Wipe Hard Drive, Reinstall Windows 7 from CDs, Restore Apps/Docs/Prefs?

Thread needs solution

I have a Toshiba Qosmio. I installed Windows 7 on it two years ago and it ran fine for most of the time since then. However, it has now slowed down so much that it's almost useless. I am thinking of the following:

1) Backup internal hard drive to external hard drive using Acronis 2011.
2) Wipe internal drive.
3) Reinstall Windows 7 from original CDs.
4) Restore apps/docs/prefs from Acronis backup, in such a way that the newly installed copy of Windows 7 is not touched or overwritten with the copy of Windows 7 from the backup.

I have the following questions:

1) Is this even possible?
2) Is it likely to fix my computer?

Thanks very much in advance to all for any info!

You will have to re-install all of your applications to the newly installed Windows 7. You will be able to restore any data files from your backup, but no programs. And yes, a new install of Windows 7 will make your system run like it did when it was new. It is a good idea to do a new install of Windows and all your applications. It can be time consuming to do this, but well worth the effort. I would install Windows 7 and get all the updates from Microsoft, then create a full disk backup of the system at this point, before installing any applications or data, in case you wish to start over again. This backup could save you a bunch of time in the future, because you could restore the backup instead of re-installing Windows from scratch.

If you have the Toshiba Recovery Disks, you can use them to do the install. If you plan to install Windows 7 from standard installation media you may have to download some drivers from Toshiba to get Windows to recognize all the hardware in your system, so be sure to download at least the network device driver(s) in advance (I get the Video/Graphics drivers, too.) and save it/them to a CD or external drive. You may have to install the network driver to support your network card/device after the Windows install if Windows 7 doesn't recognize it. Once the network card/device is working, you can get the rest of the drivers you need from Windows Update or Toshiba.
