x200 thinkpad, FDE and acronis versions

Thread needs solution

getting support from acronis is getting harder and harder so though i'd try the forum.

have been using trueimage workstation 9.1 for years and been relatively happy as it's saved me more often than not.

have moved to a thinkpad x200 with windows 7 pro with a FDE (full disk encryption) HDD.

questions
1) is workstation 9.1 compatible with windows 7
2) is any acronis product compatible with FDE drives?

acronis is so elegant compared to lenovos rescue and recovery that i shudder to think i have to give up true image if not compatible.

Hello Jesse,

We're really sorry for the delay with the response.

I will surely help you and answer all your questions regarding Acronis software.

1. I regret to inform you that Acronis True Image 9.1 Workstation doesn't support Windows 7. This OS is compatible only with Acronis True Image Home 2010 and Acronis Backup&Recovery 10 family (the successor of Acronis True Image Workstation and Server versions). Please check the full list of Acronis software compatible with Windows 7 in this KB article.

2. Acronis products may fail to back up or restore partitions or files encrypted by specialized software. The following situations can occur:

  • Acronis software may fail to access an encrypted partition from Windows and thus will not back it up.
  • Acronis software may back up an encrypted partition from Windows, but restoring such a partition will make it unencrypted. If an encrypted system partition is backed up and then restored, then the machine will become unbootable after the restore. This is only true when working in Windows.
  • Some files may be missing in the backup.

However, you can always create a raw (sector-by-sector) backup of an encrypted partition when booted from Acronis Bootable Rescue Media.

If the encryption key is based on the hard drive or some hardware serial numbers, a sector-by-sector copy may not work as expected. The best solution will then be to create the backup in Windows. Then, when restoring it, do it as you would do it normally. The only difference is that after the restore you will need to rebuild the MBR.

Thank you.
