MigrateEasy 7 not so easy

Thread needs solution

I'm trying to migrate from a 40 GB drive to a 500 GB drive.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 3000 with 1 GB of RAM, running Windows XP SP3. The original drive (Disk 0) is a Western Digital PATA (EIDE) with 3 partitions configured as follows, as reported by Migrate Easy 7:

FAT16, 47.03 MB, 85% free space (Not a clue what this is)
FAT32, 33.09 GB, 3% free space (My data and OS partition)
FAT32, 4.106 GB, 10% free space (Assumed to be the Dell restore partition)
Unallocated 7.844 GB (Don't know why, but it came that way)

I installed the new drive per Dell manual, with the jumper set to Cable Select (CS) and plugged into the second (middle) connector of the ribbon cable. The original drive is also set to CS and is plugged into the end connector. During boot I entered the BIOS and turned on auto-detect for a second HD. After booting the system I used the Windows Computer Management tool to verify that the second drive was available. The OS sees the new drive as: Disk 1, 465.76 GB Unallocated, Uninstalled.

So far so good, right?

I ran Migrate Easy and selected a manual Clone Disk operation. I adjusted the partitions, keeping all but the data partition the same to maximize my actual OS/data space, and continued the cloning process. There were no errors during the operation and Migrate Easy 7 even reported that the clone successful. HOWEVER, the entire cloning process took less than 2 minutes to complete. I let the OS boot one last time using the original drive, then I shut down the computer and moved the new drive to the end connector of the ribbon cable. I did not plug in the old drive.

I powered up and - nothing. The BIOS error said it could not find an OS to boot.

I shut down and moved the new drive back to the second connector, restoring the original drive back to it's original position and was able to boot the OS. I used the Windows Computer Management tool again to see if there were any changes. There were none. The utility reported the new drive as: Disk 1, 465.76 GB Unallocated, Uninstalled.

I ran Migrate Easy again, but this time using the automated feature. As before, there were no errors during the operation and Migrate Easy 7 reported that the clone successful. HOWEVER, the entire cloning process still took less than 2 minutes to complete. After swapping the drives, I got the same error as before.

Attached is your diagnostic software report. Please help.

Julio,

I wonder if Migrate Easy can actually work with cable select drives, as that configuration is not common these days. I didn't realise Dell still used that method with IDE drives.

I have a feeling the only way you'll get the clone to work is to either physically change the jumpers on the drives to master and slave (you will need a standard drive cable, the CS one won't work) and then clone or better still, if you have access to an external drive attached via USB, Firewire or eSata, insert the new drive there and clone.

I haven't used Migrate Easy by itself but the version that is part of True Image (the TI cloning function is exactly the same or similar to the ME function as far as I know).

I would also suggest making an image before cloning if you can, just in case things go wrong.

Make sure you do not select the wipe original drive when cloning as then you'll end up with no OS or files at all if the clone doesn't work. Make sure you give both the drives meaningful labels so you don't select the wrong drives.

Does ME allow you to make a rescue disk?

unable to get migrate easy to detect drives on a windows machine. very strange. i could swear it worked another machine before with similar sata drives. only this time, it refuses to detect the drives.

anyone seen this before? any ideas?
