Change location of iTunes device backups, on Windows 10

Also, do you do iTunes backups?  If so, there's a good chance that they are eating up valuable space on your C: drive too as they store the phone/tablet backups in your profile under appdata (terrible design).

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

I use junction points to direct them to another drive so that my OS doesn't fill up with these.

Could you please explain how you did this? It bugs me that Apple doesn't provide a way to move this backup location. They do provide a way to change location of the iTunes Media folder, but not device backup location.

I've never used junction points, so I'd appreciate learning how you did this. I use Windows 10.

See webpage: How to Change iTunes Backup Location on Windows 10 - which has the information you need including using mklink to create the junction / symbolic link to the new backup location.

Thanks, Steve. Nice to see you still here.

I didn't receive any notification about your reply, even though I've been on the forums since you replied. Is it just me, or are notifications an issue with this forum?

Just replied ref the notifications on the other topic in Forum Admin...!

Just in case anyone else finds this while looking for a way to move iTunes mobile devices backups:

The article is essentially correct, though I believe that copying the old backup contents to the new location is unnecessary and not optimal.

I did not copy the old backup directory contents to the new location. After temporarily renaming the old directory (prior to deleting it) and creating the symlink, I used iTunes to run a new backup. The new backup folder is smaller than the old one by a few thousand files and over 2 GB smaller. I suspect that, since I had been backing up this iPhone for years, the old backup location stored a lot of outdated information that was never properly purged.
