Consolidation Gets Stuck - Happens on Two Computers

Thread needs solution

First, I'm very unhappy with this product. Unless something happens to increase the quality of Acronis True Image, I'm moving on. The least Acronis could do is extend its support by more than 30 days.

On two of my computers Acronis gets stuck while consolidating. It just hangs on the windows titled "Consolidation Progress". See the attached.

After letting it sit for hours, I can hit cancel to get back to the main program. After this, one of two scenarios happens. The first scenario occurs when you hit either "consolidate" (again) or "explore and recover" only to find out it did indeed consolidate the backups. This is annoying, and if it did this 100% of the time, I would reluctantly live with it. The second scenario is like the first, BUT it gives you an error about a consolidation already in progress and/or it wigs out when going to "explore and recover" invoking a reboot to clear. While rebooting, most of the Acronis processes are flagged as being hung by Windows, prompting you to end them by force. Upon completion of the reboot, everything clears and you find that Acronis did indeed consolidate the backups. Not cool.

My memory is good. I've checked it a bazillion times. I've uninstalled, cleaned, and reinstalled Acronis on both computers more than once.

I need this to be fixed. Is there an upcoming patch coming down the road or can somebody help me now?

Hello Grammatrain,

Thank you for finding time to open a thread regarding this issue.

I'm sincerely sorry for you've faced it. I've checked with our Development team: there are no known issues that would match your description, so we'll need some additional logs to localize the issue. Could you please send us the following data:

  1. Exact sequence of steps performed
  2. Where the backups are located
  3. Acronis Info

This should shed some light onto the situation.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you.

Consolidation needs a lot of free backup space: it is "assembling and editing" each file to be consolidated in a temporary file which can be bigger than the biggest file being consolidated, then, when this temporary file is successfully completed, it will erase the original files and rename the backup files to reflect the consolidation.
Make sure you have enough space on the backup disk.

Hello Patrick, and Pat,

Thank you for your comments.

Patrick, we would like to investigate the issue, and would appreciate if you could provide us with the information I've requested previously in this comment.

Unfortunately we cannot localize the cause, and the issue without the additional information, and we would sincerely appreciate your cooperation.

Thank you.

My Acronis is the original (no updates)
I have increments stored on a spare 500GB drive that is SATA conected to my PC
I am opening Acronis and I go to the backup page and right click on the backup I want to consolidate and go down to advanced and click consolidate
I get a message saying that Acronis is estimating the time and it just sits there forever. I go look an hour later and the new file has been created but the old files that were consolidated are not deleted.

I am storing the new file on the same spare HDD which is half empty (about 250GB)

Thank you for the update, Patrick,

do you mind sending us the logs in addition? They would show us at what exact step the product gets stuck.

Thank you.

ok, tell me how to find the logs

It will take a week because that PC crashed last nite and needs a new motherboard

Hi Patrick,

Please use our Acronis Info tool. Install it, and run it, it will gather the logs automatically, and place them to the folder you have the saved the tool to. Find the instructions in this KB article: http://kb.acronis.com/content/2707

Please also note that you need to have the issue reproduced before obtaining the logs, otherwise the investigation won't be successful.

Let us know if you have any additional questions, we'll help.

Thank you.

OK, I downloaded and installed but I will have to wait for when I try the consolidate again - maybe in a week or so

If I might chime in here --

There are other threads complaining about consolidation, including one that I started (http://forum.acronis.com/forum/27067). Another one is http://forum.acronis.com/forum/28295

It is very easy to duplicate the problem:

1. Do a month's worth of incremental backups
2. Start a consolidation
3. Wait forever

In my case, I selected the first (full) and the last incremental to be kept.

My Acronis info file is attached.

My apologies for not responding sooner. I didn't realize I had to check the option about receiving responses in my account settings and I thought this issue was just being ignored.

Things have changes since I first posted, but I'm still having an issue with consolidation. I've wiped out and reinstalled XP with a minimal set of software. I also have the latest version of Acronis 2012 installed. I understand what you're saying about needing disk space, but does this apply when you're only performing full backups? I have one set that I only do full backups on and attempted to consolidate when the backup disk became full. I would think that Acronis would just delete the previous full backup and update the log. It just hung there and didn't do anything for quite a while before I killed Acronis. I just hit "explore and recover" and deleted the old backups and it worked. Again, I would think consolidation in this case would work the same way.

I have a report file, but I don't like what it reveals enough to post it online for anyone to download. Do you have some other option like a secure FTP site?

Funny everyone else is posting about this too...I have been trying all weekend (after a consolidation) to get my backups to backup as well.. Acronis basically sits there with a blank stare on it's GUI face face when I try to do a back up and nothing happens. I'm very angry about this.

There are times when Acronis won't start a new task because it thinks (and it might be right) that there is already a task running. Even though you don't see anything happening (no progress window), it might be doing something in the background.

Try a reboot, if you haven't already.

I don't think this is the issue unless whatever is running in the background is running continuously. If it is, it's still a problem. Yet another bug.
