Very slow in creating incremental back-up - conflict with Kaspersky?

Thread needs solution

Hi guys - first post and hope someone can help. Have True Image 11 - Home, and use it to make incremenatl back-ups every month. What I have noticed however, is that it takes forever and is completed with errors. Tonight started at 19:17 and finished at 20:49 ! Now I may be wrong - but that seems way to long. One possible problem might be that I also run Kaspersky anti virus software - and there may be a conflict or something going on, where KP checks every thing? Or something else?

It might be as simple as disabling KP and then running programme - but would have to remember and do it manually etc. which is less than ideal.

If it helps - have attached copy of log and acronis info file.

Grateful if anyone could help and point out what I might be doing wrong or could do to help improve situation - it is really annoying when you hear hard drive churning away in background and you are not doing anything!

PS - have two hard drives - 'C' - where all work is done and 'D' - which is only used for Acronis back-up if needed.

Cheers - Alan

Alan,

Has it always taken roughly an hour or is this happening only recently?

What OS are you using?

How much used space is on your main drive?

I can't look at your attachments where I am at the moment, so I have to ask, are you referring to TIH 11 or TIH 2011?

What size are the tib files on your backup drive? If they are looking like full size images and these are increments check you aren't running a defrag between images.

Hi Colin - thanks for prompt reply - will try and answer your questions.

I am not sure how recent this is - when first started using software it seemed OK - it was always happening in the background, so never bothered to go and check until recently - and then noticed taking very long etc.

OS - operating Windows XP - home 2002 - service pack 3
C drive - 141 GB free out of 229 GB
Software being used is Acronis True Image 11 Home

Have just went into E drive to check size of tib files - expecting to see one for 9th June 2012 - which is when I thought I had run full back-up - and which I was then incrementally backing up to.

Now see that this file is 'zero' size - so for whatever reason there is no full back-up created ...

So apologies everyone - will go back and see if I can create a proper full back-up and and then back this new copy up and see how long it takes

Alan,

Have a look in the True Image log and see if there is a message about failed tasks, also run chkdsk /f on both disk just to check there are no lurking problems that might have stopped TI from running the task.

Also consider booting from the TI bootable media CD and do a backup and validation when booted from the CD. The validation can be done as part of the backup or as a single operation. You can also use the CD to validate some of the backups which might be questionable.

As the bootable media is the recommended method to restore your system, using the CD to validate the backups can provide more assurance of their quality.

If using the old version 11, validating the files via the CD would still be a good idea but procedure could differ slightly.

Hi Colin & Grover - thanks for advice and sorry for appearing to be a numpty (had assumed this prog would run in background and never have to go near again - unless C drive imploded !)

Have followed all advice above:

1) used chkdsk and both C: and E: drives are ok (C: 229GB - 141GB free; E: 232GB - 152GB free)

2) deleted all previous tib files (kept one system back-up)

3) ran new full back up - size: 80,230,057 time: 21:18 to 23:03 (1:45 hrs - is this reasonable?)
log showed one issue (see attached log 230324) with a warning at step 8 - 11 (0x64000B) - 'Priority changed to low'. Also - step16 - locking partition C - took 1:42 hrs - is this OK?

4) after post, using boot up CD - verified this back up - OK - no problems

5) using boot up CD again - created incremental back-up - size 1,902,982 time 22:58 to 00:50 (see attached log 005010) which repeated the same error message again at step 8 - and again was longest at step 16 - locking partition C - which this time took 0:52 hrs to complete - is this OK?

So - grateful if you could review / comment on above and if this appears normal / reasonable - so be it.

If this is the case - I am a bit disappointed that each time I make an incremental back-up will take one hour or so - but if that's what it is will live with it.

Thanks again for all your help,

Alan

PS - still think Kaspersky is doing something nasty !!

Alan,

In a rush - but your log entries are fine, quite normal, the part of the disk that is being imaged is always locked so nothing can alter the snapshot that TIH has taken and the priority low is the default setting and is just an information message.
