Can I create custom filenames for Backups? ATIH2012 does not let me and truncates my name!

Thread needs solution

Here is a classic case of ATIH2012 Confusion.

The last backup I ran on 7/15/2012 had a cryptic backup filename generated by the ATIH program. This happened DESPITE me specifying my own filename. In fact, the attached Logfile and screen images say (show) that my chosen filename was supposedly used. Yet, somehow, the ATIH program overruled and created its own cryptic filename of [Disc name][blank].tib i.e. OS_(C).tib   This is in fact a truncation of my intended file name of OS (C)Drive_C_July_Full_Bkup_set

As can be seen in the attached image of "Browse for Backup", I could so easily be confused by the previous backup's filename, dated 5/6/2012; i.e. OS_(C)(1).tib.  Typical ATIH2012 Confusion.

What gets me most upset is that I managed to use custom filenames successfully in my previous Backup-Set, and I haven't a clue how I managed it - seeing the hassles I'm having now!

Any ideas anyone why ATIH ignored my intended filename??

Are you running the current version of ATIH 2012. The current version is Acronics True Image Home 2012 Update 2.1 build 7133. If not I would suggest updating to the latest version and creating a new task and giving that a try. On a side note, since you seem to want to keep backup copies for different dates using different tasks, might I suggest that for each task, you create a different subfolder in your backup destination to help with identifying the backups. Also keep in mind, the name shown in the partition and backup listing is the task name. The destination filename could be different than the task name. Please open the settings on your july task, select your destination using the browse fuction, and set your backup filename once you have the folder open for viewing.

Andrew,
As James wrote:

If you click on the link below and look at figure 8, this will illustrate what James has written.
Also note the content of figure 18 which illustrates the difference between the task name and the name assigned to the backup file.

Thank you for your suggestions, although updating to build 7133 had no effect on this routine - except delay my implementation of your's and Grover's advice.

You definitely clarified the issue for me by pointing out that the Primary Backup and Recovery screen (see attached) is actually a list of backup TASKS. I thought I was still looking at backup file names, based on my previous long use of ATI v9.0. Typically, Acronis again fails to provide its screens with proper "titles" - - - this one omits to mention Tasks anywhere in the display. Moreover, it's use of the "attribute" Version in each of the tasks doesn't make any sense. In the Task I created as you suggested, now has the Version value of 3, which neither designates that this Task creates the Full backup, or the subsequent Differential backups. It just happens to match my 3rd processing of the task: one Full bkup, and two Diff bkups.

Until I got a hang of Grover's instruction (to view his example Figure 8) about creating file names, I still ended up with Acronis creating simplistic filenames for the FULL bkup and first DIFF bkup; i.e. OS _(C).tib and OS_(C)2.tib respectively, as shown in my attached Explorer folder display. Not exactly elegant; only somewhat resolve once one learns how to tack on @date, etc. descriptors.........

I appreciate your feedback about creating my own directory subfolders, but it doesn't really address the ongoing weaknesses of Acronis' interfaces. I didn't have to create subfolders before! I'm coming from the perspective that I happily used the ATI V9.0 functionality and interfaces for years, and along comes v10.0 and 2012 with their unexplained major GUI changes for the worse. I'm left feeling really bummed out as I did when I first experienced major interface revamps of MS Office 2003 (over Office 97) and of Vista over Win XP.

I'm not out to savage Acronis as I do admire the reliability of their s/w. But I can't just pass over these intrinsic interface ambiguities arising from such unfamiliar and confusing screen designs ..........

Hi Grover (I'm not sure how to copy this to AS James to whom I just replied separately)

Thank you for your feedback and advice which I followed (eventually) when I couldn't get a hang on the "file naming" protocol. I must say, I was really thrown when I went to select backup Destination, as shown in your Fig 7, and then had to skip the intuitive location selection, and instead click on Browse, then scroll and select drive/folder and then enter a filename. I also see, upon viewing your Fig18, how you have chosen to write a guide to help explain the convoluted screen interfaces. I appreciate the time you invested, and frustrated that I didn't get to study your guides earlier [typical IT worker behaviour]

I've chosen to trial the new beta version of ATIH2013 but wonder if there is any point in commenting on any glaring interface issues. I don't want to waste my time if the feedback is not what the Dev team want right now. On the other hand, I'm passionate about application integrity, and can't help getting drawn into commenting on misleading or nonsensical GUIs.

Cheers, Andrew

Thanks Andrew.

Sometimes my guides are not so easy to follow but hopefully show one method of achieving a goal. I think along the lines that if I have trouble, then others will as well, which explains why so many guides. As the old saying "Necessity is the mother of inventions"--or something like that.

The 2013 version will bring improvements and new issues--if it has been like other versions.

By all means, you should express your feelings which is one of the purposes of the beta. but post them inside the 2013 beta forum--according to the rules you agreed to.
