Problems with ATI Home 2009 and vista sleep function

Thread needs solution

Hello. I'm using ATI Home 2009 on a Vista 64 system. The problem is this: I need to wake the pc from sleep when the backup tasks are run. Since ATI doesn't do this, I set this up with Windows task scheduler. It works fine with all non-incremental and non-differential backups.

Trouble is, differential/incremental backups don't get created, it's always a full backup overwriting the previous one.

Is this a known issue with the scheduler, when run from command line?

Hello Cooper,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

I may recommend you to use the following KB article to set up a pre-backup command that will automatically manage backup files saved to a local disk. Using batch file from this article you will be able to create a set of Full backups only or certain number of set Full + Incremental/Differential backups.

It doesn't work. It works only if I start the task from the Acronis interface. If I start it with a command prompt or with Windows Task Scheduler, it just overwrites the last full backup.

I am having the same problems with ATI home v11 on vista.

Sometimes the scheduled differential backup starts after the computer wakes-up, sometimes it does not.

Acronis does not appear to be able to wake-up a sleeping Vista PC without assistance.

This seems to all work fine on XP.

Please help acronis support!

Hello all,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

I can confirm that Acronis software is unable to wake up Windows Vista (this subject was widely discussed on the old forum).

Even if you wake up the OS by means of Windows task scheduler, the OS will fall asleep during the backup operation in several minutes. This behaviour has been confirmed by Microsoft company.

Thank you.

Well, is this going to be fixed in True Image 2010? It is a very important feature I think.

Ok - so Acronis should probably be advertising that scheduled tasks will not work with Vista in sleep mode.

I'm not sure what to do now.

Is Microsoft claiming this is a feature or something they will fix?

Can someone explain why the scheduled tasks appear to work sometimes when the PC wakes up?

Ashley:

Microsoft made a fundamental change to power management in Vista. The change was to make it virtually 100% certain that a laptop put in standby would remain in standby, thus avoiding the "hot laptop in a backpack" syndrome. The change was to set a timer upon wakeup. If there was no user activity (meaning keystrokes or mouse activity) for 2 minutes after waking, the PC goes back to sleep automatically. An unintended side-effect of this decision is that if you have a scheduled task that wakes the PC, it will wake up and begin execution. However, scheduled tasks do not involve keystrokes or mouse movement, so two minutes after the scheduled task begins the PC will go back to sleep.

Microsoft has since released a patch to fix this; it is available here

. Keep in mind that the Acronis scheduler will not wake a sleeping Vista PC, as Oleg has posted. They would have to modify their scheduler in order to do this. But with the release of the Microsoft patch, there is no reason why they could not do so.

Meanwhile, you can do this yourself. Install the patch and then set up a task using Vista's task scheduler. Have the scheduled task wake the PC and start a TrueImage task from the command prompt.

I had posted an article on the old forum describing how to do this. You could use the information in the article to craft your own solution. Just ignore the parts about the "StayAwake" utility. The utility is not needed if you install the Microsoft patch linked to above.

Final caution - when you run an Acronis task from the command line, many of the features of the scheduler do not work; for example sending email notifications, doing incremental backups, etc. These features only work when run from the user interface in the TrueImage software. Many users reported that even though they created an Acronis task to run an incremental image, only full images were created if the task was started from the command line. This is a limitation that Acronis would need to address.

Let's try this out.

There's another option I discovered yesterday, a good software you can get here:

http://enviprot.com/

The basic version is free.

It's called auto-shutdown manager. It allows to control how the system wakes up and goes to sleep, for instance you can set a condition stopping the system from entering sleep if there is a certain amount of activity on a particular drive. I'm testing it since yesterday and it seems to work quite fine.

Dear,

I am using true image home 2009. (os=vista) And the scheduled jobs don't start. Manual starting is ok.

Is there now already a solution ? What is the final solution ?

How can I make it work ?

Jan,

Donwload the schedule manager here http://kb.acronis.com/content/1859, follow the instructions to zap all your tasks and then reschedule them.

Does this (scheduled task not starting and/or falling asleep) issue also exist in Acronis True Image Home 2011 & vista.

or is the downloading or acronis schedule manager also needed for Acronis True Image Home 2011 & vista ?

Jan,

Sorry, I may have misinterpreted your post. If you computer falls asleep and prevents the task from running, downloading the schedule manager won't change anything.
