Boot Disk FC SAN Support

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I see in the specs that Acronis Backup and Recovery support fibre channel disks. My question is, can someone confirm that it will support this using the boot CD? i.e. I want to boot off the Acronis CD, then image a local SAS disk INTO a fibre channel LUN assigned to that server.

Please reply if you have first hand experience and can say for sure if the boot disk will recognize FC disks.

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi David

What you are wanting to do should not be an issue BUT as with any bootable OS there can be no guarantee that newer HBA’s will be detected and at times you may need to look into creating your own bootable media that includes updated device drivers (WinPE based Boot CD, where you can add your own Windows device drivers to).

What I would suggest doing is booting up your server with the boot CD and check if your FC array and SAS array are detected, you should see the entire ‘RAID volume’ and not individual disks, if you are seeing individual disks this generally means there is a driver issue and you should look at creating a WinPE based boot CD with the latest device drivers for that controller.

All the best with it :-)

Hi,

I'm looking to backup and restore SAN drives from one physical server to a new physical server. Is that now possible with Acronis 11? Thanks.

Hi Christopher,

What you are wanting to do is possible with Acronis Backup and Recovery 11 (as well as previous versions of Acronis)... If you are also moving the OS to the new server you will also need the Universal Restore option as well... if it's just a data volume you are moving universal restore will not be needed for this operation.

All the best!
