Installation failed- configuration data is corrupt -- possible FIX (WinXP)

Thread needs solution

I could NOT install ATIH 2012. I downloaded the software three times because I believed the error message that the configuration data was "corrupt". There was nothing wrong with my download.

In my particular case, I found a fix for my particular problem, maybe it will work for you too if you are getting this message when you try to install.

In the message window after the program failed to install, there was an option to create a Report. I saved it to my desktop and read the contents. After about 200 lines, I saw a reference to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\5E3FE342D73551A4E88E745D74D3C937

So I got regedit going and located that exact key and deleted it.
You already know you have to be careful in regedit, you can hose your system if you don't pay attention.

After deleting that EXACT key, the install began to work.

But then it failed again because the weblink item in:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Acronis\Acronis True Image Home\Acronis Web Site

either wasn't there at all or had wrong data in it. I deleted the entire Acronis "folder" from the All users Programs area. At the time, I had no other Acronis products installed so I didn't care.
Once I did that, the install ran correctly from the beginning all the way to the end, without a hitch.

This worked for me, it may work for you.

If you are on Windows 7 (or even 8 now) maybe you can use this as a clue for getting rid of the install error.

Good Luck,
Jeff

P.S. I got the registry key from the error report. I don't know if your machine will reference the same exact key, so you should use the key that is in the error report for your machine.

Fretts,

Thanks for posting that fix, you might also be able to use the Acronis clean up utility to clear the entries, though that will also disable all Acronis products that are installed.
