How do i do this with ATIH 2013 ???

Thread needs solution

I have Windows 7 Home Premium x64 in my laptop.

I am thinking of upgrading to Windows 8 Pro. I want to backup my current Windows 7 system so that incase something goes wrong while upgrading or after upgrading....then I can switch back to my Windows 7 system. My laptop hdd size is 320 gb.

I have a Transcend Storejet 500gb external hdd which I cannot open from its enclosure (for warranty reasons) and i don't have any spare hdd..... so I won't be able to remove the hdd from its enclosure and put it in my laptop.

Can I make a hdd clone of my current system to my external hdd. Will I be able to restore (clone) my laptop hdd back from the external hdd using usb port itself since I cannot remove the external hdd from its enclosure ?

Is there any other method to do this ?

Greatly appreciate your time and help.

Warm regards

You can clone but it's not the wise way to go. Better to backup the entire hard disk onto another harddisk. So long as the used space on the source is smaller than the free space on the target, you can make as many backups as you like and you won't be deleting any content that was already on the target.

Due a Diskmode backup to get every partition, then you can restore the backup and be back where you were when you made the backup. Before relying on a backup program, be sure to make the bootCD and go through the steps for a restore up to but not including the final proceed -- this makes sure you can do a restore with the BootCD.

Let me use my own experience to help you. I agree that Clone is not the best solution in this case. I have a dual drive system, where my OS drive is an SSD and my program / data drive is a 7200 rpm HDD. I backed up Windows 7 configuration, both drives, using 2013, to an external HDD. I installed Win 8 as an upgrade the first time and clean the second. In both cases, I did something that caused the machine to become unbootable (my own fault). So I booted into the 2013 recovery and just restored the C drive with Win 7 (didn't do the D, because the data was already there and configured to Win 7. Rebooted when done and had a fully functional Windows 7 system again. Everything worked as it should. Even now, when I am running Windows 8, I can go back and forth between both Win 7 and 8 by just recovering my C drive. Do a backup...the recovery is pretty easy!
