fltsrv.sys driver prevents XP system from booting in safe mode

Thread needs solution

I am using Acronis True Image Home 2010 in a recently custom-built desktop PC.
The system always stalls at the splash screen and needs pressing a hardware reboot button into the normal mode.
When I tried to reboot it into the safe mode it stalled on the following line:
fltsrv.sys.
Google search directed me to this forum, and I saw some posts regarding Acronis True Image 2012, and some issues with disabling Startup Recovery Manager, looking at windows dumps, etc.

I am not sure my version has Startup recovery manager.

Anyways, I need to update my drive firmware, and this rebooting problem might screw up the upgrade.

I've had good and bad experiences with Acronis before and would like to attempt troubleshooting before giving up.
On the other hand, is there a way to at least temporarily disable the interfering drivers so I can do safely this firmware upgrade?
