Cannot backup at all

Every time I try to backup my computer I get an error message saying "Error E00640068 The RPC server is unavailable". I'm running XP Pro and have some operating system issues. I believe some system files are corrupted and I was planning to re-format the disk and reinstall the OS, but I cannot backup anything using Acronis. Is there a workaround?

Boot from media or borrow another HDD, install XP and Acronis there, and back up data from the current HDD.
