Hello David Walsh,

Thank you for posting this question in our forum. I am happy to assist you.

I have moved your post to the Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 & 11 Forum section.

In Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 as well as in any other Acronis Backup & Recovery version, you create a complete virtual machine in the selected format. To access these files, you need to start the virtual machine with the dedicated virtual machine player. For any other operation, you should use the .tib archive.

If this does not match your question, please describe in more detailed steps what you have done and what you want to achieve.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Peter
Many thanks for the reply.
Just to provide with a little more info.
I use both Windows Virtual XP and VMware and they recognise their own extensions.
I used the ACBR recovery tool and selected new virual machine as my choice of destination.
When I recovered a .TIB file from within the version 11 virtual ACBR tool, it created a .hdd extension, which these products won't read and renaming them doesn't help.
Is there a way of running in this .hdd virtual drive please?
When I try and locate a virtual machine from within ACBR it doesn't see any.
It may be, I need to gain more understanding of how to use the tool.

regards
dave

Hello David Walsh,

Thank you for your reply.

The .hdd extension is used by default from Parallels. If you do not have the related Parallels Player for virtual machines, you are not able to start it. When converting a backup file to a new virtual machine, Acronis Backup & Recovery create a list of files. For the most virtual machines, you will find the new virtual drives (depending on the format, you get .vhd, .vmdk, .hdd etc) and a list of config files. You always should convert to a new empty folder. Then you start your virtual machine player and choose to open the new created virtual machine from this folder.

Acronis Backup & Recovery itself is not able to access the new created virtual drives. Please find more detailed information about this theme in this section of our user guide or this article (its from version 11.5, but also fits for version 11) from our knowledge base.

If you need additional assistance, please contact support. You will find all available support options in our Customer handbook.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Peter
This is exactly what I needed. The directions towards using Parallels was the key and also the pointer towards creating a list of files from options listed. I was only selecting the first option, which was converting to a drive. Having not used this particular VM package before or really mastering the ACBR Virtual options, I found it strange to naviagte. I still have to get used to the options of virtual machines within the ACBR software and how this ties in but will get there. I am grateful for the introduction to Parallels and once installed, I was able to access and indeed use the image perfectly. I intend purchasing this VM package for future use. Thanks again Peter. Regards
Dave
