File Backup - Folder Exclusion

Thread needs solution

I'm on a trial version of TI 2013. I'm experiencing two problems:

First, I tried creating a File Backup (not Disk and Partition Backup). I check a folder, for example, C:\User\\AppData, all subfolders become selected automatically. Now, I want to exclude a folder inside AppData, say, C:\User\\AppData\Local\Temp, I would uncheck the box for Temp. However after saving the task and going back to edit it, the folder I unchecked became checked again. I figured maybe this is how selecting folders work.

So now comes the second problem: I went to the Exclusions options to try excluding that folder. But it doesn't allow folder input, only files. I know Disk and Partition Backup has a Browse button, but it's not there for File Backup. I also tried putting the full path like for Disk and Partition Backup, but the Add button remains grayed out.

Is there any way to exclude a subfolder?

Thanks!

There has been some discussion on the issue of folder selection as you have described. When you create the file/folder task the first time, and make your folder selections then save the task, when it is run, the task works as expected. If you try and edit the task settings the folder selection indeed has all the sub folders selected again, and even if you deselect the folders and save the task, the task will then contain all the sub folders wether selected or not. This has been reported to and duplicated by Acronis and is being investigated. The workaround at this point is to create a new task, make your selections and then save and run/schedule it. Do not edit the task settings after the inital folder selection. Unfortunately, this bug was not discovered during beta testing. You are correct that the file/folder backup does not include a browse for folder, since you shouldn't need to browse to exculde a folder, just uncheck it.
Since you are running the Trial you are entitled to pre-sales support. If you would like to report the issue to Acronis yourself and/or open a support case with them, feel free to do so.

Have you tried creating a custom category with only the excluded folder and marking it not be be included with the backup?

Consider the scenario of backing up say 5 User accounts. Consider also the many application-specific folders within each User's Local folder - many are cache stores that don't warrant backup (I'm thinking of Adobe Lightroom preview cache for instance....many gigbytes of photo previews that speed-up Lightroom behaviour).

In this scenario, I would like to backup all User accounts. But I don't wish to have to deselect all those folders under Local etc. that don't warrant backup. I'd rather make a folder mask such as ~\*cache*\ or ~\*preview*\ etc. and use that to exclude ALL such folders in all User accounts.

I'd also like to exclude some folders under my Program install directory - by folder name.

The 2013 folder deselect bug discussed above encourages the inclusion of folder exclusion masks in future versions my view.

I happen to have used and tested four of ATIH's competitor offerings and each does Folder exclusion masks...ATIH is the odd one out here.

(I'd also like a very accurate indication of the size and file count of any backup so I can see when changing my file and folder exclusions is having a significant impact - anything to speed up backups of essential-only data).

Cheers.
Greg

I use the retail version of TI 2013 and am still experiencing the same problems as K.W. reports.
I also agree to the remarks of Greg.
Looking forward to a (bug)fix.

Thanks!

I experience the same problem. This really feels like an amateur bug - can we please have an ETA when this is fixed?

BTW: Using the newest retail version just downloaded and installed yesterday: Build 5551

Thanks.
