the last backup has been canceled due to timeout
I installed the trial version and whenever I try to backup I get the error in the title. My computer has a 250GB drive with several partitions and I'm trying to backup to a 1TB external USB drive. The external drive seems mine when I did a chkdsk and reformat. I've tried doing the backup on a clean boot, shutting down non-essential services, etc. I noticed when I tried again this morning that the calculated time started at 2:30 and kept creeping up like it was slowing down. I believe when I left for work it was already estimating 4+ hours.
The log is attached. I see some events in there like "the drive is not read" and "the device is not ready", but am not sure if that's related to my issue or not.

I already moved most of what I can from C: to D:. This laptop has been problematic and I haven't been able to do Windows updates (Vista) for over a year. It does the chkdsk ever time I reboot the pc unless I stop it. Since I don't have a Vista disc my plan is to backup the entire drive and then upgrade to Windows 7.
I did increase the timeout since I posted and I'm getting "device is not ready". A thread here stated to change policies for the usb drive to "Optimize for quick removal". I just checked and it it's already set to that. I guess I can switch it the other way and see what happens.

Tried it.... "The drive is not ready". Windows explorer is able to access it so I'm not sure what's going on.

The every time check for errors by chkdsk on every bootup is not the same as doing an actual check for disk errors.
As I stated in post #1, I do recommend that you do this check and it will take a couple hours on each partitions.
Is your external drive set for a Secure zone now or before?
Do you have another usb cable and can you plug into a different usb connection point?
If you open your desktop menus and go to Accessories/systemtools
Look around inside this accessories folder and see if you have an option to create a Windows System DVD, etc.
If you need to make a backup, use your prior TrueImage Bootable media CD or flash drive and boot from the media.
Do a full backup from the prior media. the trial version of 2012 does not enable a backup from the CD so using the trial is not an option for the CD.

Open the Device Manager and open the header
Universal Serial Bus Controller
Find the device labelled
USB Root Hub
Right click on this listing and open the Power Management settings.
There should be an option there for the system to turn off power to the usb connection.
Be sure this option is UNCHECKED.
You may have more than one usb root hubs. Verify them all.

Chkdsk complete, still get same message.
External drive not set for secure zone. The drive cable has a unique plug to go into the drive so I can't try another. I will try another USB port after I send this message. All USB ports have the power off option unchecked.
There is no option to make a Windows System DVD. I don't have a prior TrueImage Bootable media CD, this is my first time trying the software. I plan on purchase the 3 pack if/when I get it to work.

I just got a new backup disk as my old one was getting full. I am trying to do a full single backup and get a timeout error.
The log reads: Operation with partition 'M:' was terminated.

Are you using the same task as before?
Is the new disk drive using the same or a different drive letter.
How is the new disk connected to your computer? USB 2.0 USB 3.0, etc.?
What brand and model is the drive.
Can you successfully copy large files from your system to the new drive with Windows Explorer / File Explorer?

I'm using the same task, yes. It's a new drive letter and I set up to backup into it. I have 2.3 TB of data and the backup drive is 4TB. connected by USB 3.0.
I can drag large video files to this drive in explorer.

1. Create a brand new backup task for the new drive.
2. Don't connect via a hub, a port in a monitor, a USB extension cord, etc. Connect the external drive directly to a USB port on the rear of the computer case. See if that works better.

You indicate your storage disk is a 4 TB disk. How is the disk partitioned (partition sizes)?
also is this disk partitioned as MBR or GPT?

I don't know. I just got it out of the box and plugged it in. It says NTFS and looks like it's one large drive.

Then , lets use the disk to find out more information about the 4TB disk.
First, let open a elevated command prompt
Go to
Start, programs, accessories
Right click on the COMMAND PROMPT listing
Click the RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR option
At the >Prompt as per the example below
Type DISKPART (and press Enter key)
Type LIST DISK (and press Enter key)
Look at display of info and identify
a. Is any disk listed under the asterisk * as being GPT style disks. All not listed under the * are conisdered to be MBR style disks.
b. Which disk # is your 4TB disk. It will probably have a size such as 3800+ GB.
The system disk is disk 0 so the usb disk may be disk 1. Assuming that the 4GB disk is #1.
Next, type SELECT DISK 1 (or whatever number is your 4t)
Next, type LIST PARTITION
Next, look at the details listed.
How many partitions listed and what sizes?
When finsihed viewed or screen capturing, close the Window (x in upper right corner)
Using DiskPart to show partiton information.
