Hi all

I'm trying to create disk backup, but get this error:

I tried a lot of times, formatted the external HD, cleaned up source HD (laptop HD), ran the check disk utility and fixed everything but still..

Please help me out.

Thanks

Run chkdsk /r on that drive.
Also run a drive checking utility from the drive manufacturer, as those sometimes catch errors missed by chkdsk.

Launch Windows Disk Management, take a screenshot of it showing all drives, and post it here.

Reality Bytes is external HD, Curiosity and System Reserved is the one I'm trying to backup.

I ran chkdsk /r and /f but that didn't fix it.

I'll run the drive check and let you know the results.

Mathew,

Sometimes the issue is on the System Reserved partition.

You can run chkdsk /r on the System Reserved partition if you temporarily assign a drive letter to it in Windows Disk Management.

Right click on the System Reserved partition and assign a drive letter (z: would be a good choice for this). Run chkdsk z: /r, after disk check, open Windows Disk Management again and right click and remove (assign none) the drive letter.

Hi James

I'll need to restart the computer to run chkdsk on System reserved. Meanwhile, I'll also try repairing acronis as mentioned here http://kb.acronis.com/content/37280?nocache=1 and I am using the software by hd manufacturer to fix the hard drive.

Will report back.

Ok so nothing worked. I did everything I could:

1. chkdsk /r on system reserved
2. reinstall acronis
3. seatools

but nothing worked. I get the same error, and when I click "Ignore All", my system just hangs..

Mathew,

Run the backup from your True Image rescue media and see if the problem is present there as well.

Okay so I uninstalled ATI completely, and then reinstalled. The error message popped again. I chose Ignore instead of Ignore All and the backup was successfully (and validated). So this works. But why the error? How can I diagnose and fix it?

Also, an unrelated questions, if I recover my backup entirely to a new drive, all my software, settings and files will be copied right? I won't have to install drivers etc? (I'm using disk backup)

Mathew,

The full disk backup could be used to restore to a new disk, or to recover your system in the event of major problems.

If the backup is indeed a full disk (all partitions) backup, then a restore/recovery would put your system back in use as it was at the time of the backup creation. The OS, programs, data, drivers, everything, would be restored.

Before counting on the full backup made from True Image running from within Windows, I would suggest that you try to do a backup using the Rescue Media. (You will need to have this available to do a restore to a failed drive, so it is a good idea to use it to make a backup and do a test restore of a few files to verify that it works on your system.)

As far as the issue with the sector read error, I'm afraid I don't know what else you can try. True Image is having trouble with reading something on your system.

If the backup made from the Rescue Media works without error and validates okay, you could then use the tool "Add a new disk" to initialize the disk in your system (effectively wiping the disk) and perform a full disk restore from the Rescue Media. This may correct the behavior in Windows
True Image. I would only do this as a last resort.
