Too many activations. Wants to deactivate wrong computer.

Thread needs solution

I used PCmover to move to a new computer. I uninstalled TI 2012 from OLD computer. I now get too many activations message. And, the solution it wants to implement is to deactivate the license on the NEW computer. I don't get it. The licensing software cannot count. And, still wants to deactivate the only copy of the software on the license that it can still talk to over the internet.

More frustrating, I can see my product licenses on the Acronis web site. But, I cannot see the activations. It would be very handy do perform a manual deactivation. It would save a lot of support time, I think.

If you allow the deactivation from the "new" computer, you will be able to re-activate it on the same computer again.

Hello,

I cannot deactivate software that is not installed on the old computer. Allowing deactivation from the new computer will not change the count of activations below what is 'allowed'. When I try to activate it again, I will be in the same problem. It is kindergarten math. Acronis thinks I have two activations when I really only have one. When I deactivate on the new computer, Acronis will think I have now only one. When I activate again on the new computer, I will be asking for a second activation, and I will have too many.

That is the situation I have now. My problem is that Acronis thinks I have an activation that I do not. That is what needs to be fixed. It is not my fault that Acronis TI 2012 did not subtract an activation when I uninstalled the software.

If you follow through the process at the prompts on the new PC, I believe it will allow you to deactivate the licence for the old PC and thus activate it for the new PC.

The simple math is this: One copy of the license is recorded as being activated. You have an installed copy on a system that has tried to activate and your are getting "too many activations" (1 in use/activated + 1 attempted activation =2) Your serial number allows only one activation AT A TIME. If you deactivate the serial number, you will then have 1 activation available again (1 in use/activated - 1 activation removal = 1 available activation)

Uninstalling the software does not remove the record of activation for the serial number used to do the install.
When the product is installed a second time (usually only have this issue if to a second system), the "too many activations" message appears because the license is still in use.

Please!!! allow the program to deactivate the copy that it "thinks" is activated now.

It does not matter WHICH machine Acronis thinks the license is activated on.

You MUST deactivate the software license even if it points to the system you are using, if you wish to EVER activate it again.

You are not deactivating a computer, just the serial number (license) assigned to one.

Once deactivated, the serial number is then freed up to allow activation again, even if on the same computer.

For one thing, when I open TI 2012 on the new computer, it displays that the product is successfully activated. I will try a back up this evening on that machine. If that works then what you propose is riskier than the scenario I have now. I don't mind a popup that says I have too many activations if the software works.

If I try to deactivate the working software, I have no guarantees that it will activate again on that new computer. Remember, Acronis still thinks it is installed on the old computer. It will NOT activate, and I will NOT have working software. Acronis thinks I have 2 activations on the one license.

2 - 1 + 1 = 2. I was never given the option of deactivating the license on the old computer. That is what I need. But, since the support period has expired, I cannot submit a ticket.

Maybe, I could try to install the software back on the old computer. That will be difficult because the laptop screen does not work any more. And, my eyes are going bad trying to find the cursor with a flashlight. Even with a secondary monitor, Windows does not know the main screen does not work and lots of dialogs start there.

Tonight, the backup test will show what I have to do.

Okay, how about some clarity here.

In your posts, you stated:
"I used PCmover to move to a new computer. I uninstalled TI 2012 from OLD computer. I now get too many activations message." and "For one thing, when I open TI 2012 on the new computer, it displays that the product is successfully activated".

Obviously, True Image is confused about the activation if the program tells you both that it is activated, and then complains about "Too many activations".

Removing the 2012 product does not deactivate the serial number assigned to that system. Since you moved the installed program to the new system, I would think that the program on the new system is the one complaining of "too many activations" Is this true?

If so, it is because the program checks to see if it is properly activated (on a regular basis), and would see the new hardware, and then complain about the activation on the new system. The activation seems to be tied to the firmware (a calculated value is used) of the system it is activated on. Moving the installed program to a new system (or installing on an additional machine) will eventually trigger the "Too many activations" message when the program checks to see if the previously calculated value is different then the calculated value of the new system.

Once again, if this is the case, you MUST deactivate the serial number using the new system (the computer system that is complaining about "Too many activations") that has the program installed currently.

If you will go ahead and allow the deactivation to take place, you can remove the activation associated with the serial number, and then be able to re-activate the current install.

You seem not willing to follow my suggestions, but I feel this is because you are unclear about how the activation process works. Please give my method a try. I have done this numerous times with both 2012 and 2013 for myself as well as the customers I support that use True Image products (2012 and above require activation).

If you wish, you can contact support here: http://www.acronis.com/support/contact-us.html

There is no charge for serial number/activation issues.

These problems are a direct result of "moving" the program. If you had tried to perform a clean install, you would have been prompted at the time of the install that you indeed already had activated the serial number on your older system, and would have been given the opportunity to remove the activation from the serial number used on the old system (via the internet and your Acronis account) following the prompt the program provides.

You may want to consider removing your installed copy from the new system and then doing a fresh install.

You will still be prompted during activation/installation, that the serial number is already in use (activated) and will then be able to remove the activation from the serial number and activate your new install. You basically are moving the activation from your current system, back to your current system.

The True Image product can be moved an indefinite number of times from system to system, but only one installed copy will stay activated at any one time. If you transfer the activation to a new system and do not remove the product from the older system, the older system will switch to a de-activated install, and complain about "Too many activations".
