why do i have over 30 files to a back up

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have ti2013 on my laptop and my wifes laptop. We have the same settings on each of our backups (a full file backup and a full image backup). We have it set up so that both will replace the previous backup.

here are my questions:

1. is this setting the cause for really long backups 6-10hrs

2. i have win7 and each backup has one trueimage file (b1_s1_v1) but for my wife who has vista: both of her backups have 30-37 files of v1-v30 at about 3.99 gb each. I imagine this would suck to restore so i need to know what im doing wrong to prevent hers from appearing as one file.

Backup time involves many variables, and you haven't given us any of them.

Is that time for the image backups?
Did you select the "sector-by-sector" backup option?
How much data are being backed up? i.e. if a full disk backup, how much disk space on the source is in use?
What is the backup target and how is it connected to the PC?
Are both PCs taking a similar amount of time to backup?

I suspect you may have accidentally selected the option to split backups into 4 GB chunks, which some users use to copy those to DVD-R.

sorry image backup is quicker. the file back up is 6-10hrs at about 210gb on a 1tb ext disk. yes both cpu are long. my laptop is 90% full.

new questions:

1. how to i get to edit "sector by sector" and what does that mean or change in my situation

2. how/where to i fix this 4gb option?

if u are talking about options>>backup splitting, both laptops say automatic. yet one has 1 backup file and the other has 30files

Does your wife's backup go to a different drive? Is it formatted FAT32? That also would explain the 4 GB limit. If you reformatted as NTFS, that limit would disappear.

yep im using an ext hard drive and its fat 32. im going to change it now. thanks and ill update

can you clear up the sector by sector question. judging by the manual. this is a good thing to have for an image backup and to help u out. it was unchecked on both laptops. we wont want to back up unused space.

No, you do not need "sector-by-sector" backup. It will just increase the time required for a backup.

Time required varies considerably with such factors as: amount being backed up; space available on target device; speed of target device; speed of interface to target device; quality of connection to target device; etc. USB 3.0 will be much faster than USB 2.0.

If an external drive, don't connect via a hub, a port in a monitor, a USB extension cord, etc. Connect the external drive directly to a USB port on the rear of the computer case.

ok note taken on the usb info. why would i not need sector by sector for a image backup. remember i joined the forum to learn as much as possible before putting in a new larger hard drive in my laptop. obviously i will want to restore an exact image. wouldnt skipping a sector by sector back up defeat the point of image restore?? just dont under stand why its not needed.

"sector-by-sector" includes sectors that are not in use, that have no data on them. You'd backup empty space for no benefit.
