Unable to restore Windows 7 image to Laptop

Thread needs solution

Hi, I have been using Acronis True Image Home for a few years now. I just bought the latest version and am trying to put an image of Windows 7 onto my laptop. In the past with XP it was a very simple and quick procedure . However, following my usual procedure of imaging, then using the bootable CD to restore , I am unable to get a bootable operating system. On completion of the restore, the system begins to boot and shows the "Windows is starting" screen for about 10 seconds or so , then proceeds to reboot all over again. I used the repair option on the Windows 7 CD but it cannot repair the problem. I am using Windows 7 Pro I would be grateful for any help with this . Thank you

Hello Paul,

Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response. Do not worry, I will help you to resolve this issue.

As far as I understand, you're trying to restore image of Windows 7 to your laptop and this system does not boot just hanging on loading screen, is that correct?

There could be several possible causes of the issue:

- You're trying to restore the image taken from some other PC with dissimilar hardware.

All versions Acronis True Image Home (except add on Acronis True Image Home 2010 Plus Pack) can restore the image from one computer to another only if both computers have absolutely identical hardware configuration. If hardware configuration of your computers is different, we recommend you to use Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 with Universal Restore or Acronis True Image Home 2010 with plus Pack. With this option you will be able to restore one image to computers with dissimilar hardware.

- You're recovering the image with some recovery partition. In some cases, recovery partitions on target system could prevent your system from booting.

Also, there's one common solution for issues with corrupted MBR (which may also be the case in our situation). You should fix the MBR on your system as it is described here (please perform the instructions related to Windows 7 only!).

If you're not able to resolve the situation by following the instructions I provided above, please clarify the following:

- Which PC have you used to create the image from?

- Probably this issue shows BSOD which you're not able to see, because PC reboots automatically. Let's figure it out by doing following:

  • 1. When your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.
  • On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press F8 when the boot menu appears.
  • 2. Use the arrow keys to highlight the Disable Automatic Reboot, and then press ENTER.
  • 3. Reboot your PC once again, check if BSOD occurs (if yes, please make a digital photo and attach it to your answer in this thread). Its code and contents will help me to localize the issue.

- Please collect Acronis Report file from your source system, which will help us to analyze the structure of your hard drives. In order to create Acronis Report file, please download Acronis Report utility, run it and create a report. The default name of this file is "report.txt" and it is saved on your desktop. Attach the report file to your answer in this thread.

Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.
