defrag

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have Acronis True Image and also O&O Defrag. I usually make a incrimental Backup. When I defrag my harddisk do I have to make a new full backup?

No, but the INC you run after the defrag will be large.
TI will see all those moved sectors as "change" and back them up.

Only you can answer that.
Keep in mind that when you re-run a FULL all the existing INC's are now orphaned and cannot be used to restore from.

The comments by TheWeaz relates (I believe) if you overlay your old full with a new full, then the prior incs have no value since the base was changed.

If you are going to defrag, then the best time to do it is before you start a backup set. Then, the backup set will no larger than before the defrag. (Also, before doing a full backup is the best time to check your disk for errors.)

An easy method of do a defrag before each full backup (with inc's) is to use Chain2Gen to help you manage your backups. You can use it to run your defrag before each full backup and not run when incremental or differential backups are being done. Check post #11 on this link for more about this.
