Using Recent Backups Update feature

Thread needs solution

I've been testing ATI 2010 and have been using the update recent backup feature on the home menu. What this appears to be doing is to create an incremental backup every time I use it. What happens when I run out of disc space on the target drive?

It will stop mid image with a 'File IO error' message.

You do have the option with a task of having TI notify you of low disk space and you can choose the trigger amount.

To keep TI in sync, any deletion of backup archives should be done from inside the TI program.

Open the restore module and the deletion can be done there. Keep in mind that incremental backups are inter-dependent. If you delete the incremental -2, then more recent backups are useless.

Item 7H in my guides below discuss the this inter-dependence.

You have several options
- on tab "automatic consolidation" use the feature to merge incrs into a new full. My experience with this feature is you need as much freespace as one the target drive as the size of what you are trying to consolidate so don't fill your drive then try to do this.

or

- on tab "backup method" use the feature to start a new chain(full) after so many incr files (delete previous)

or

do backup generations (grandfather/father/son) - "chain2gen"

there are possibly other options but these are the first that come to mind.

Thanks for the replies! How long should consolidation take? It was estimating over 12 hours. At that kind of rate, I might as well do a new image?

I use option 3 as it gives me the most control, and options to restore. I do not use option 1 because it needs a ton of space and takes "forever". My feeble experience with consolidate was that it takes MUCH longer to consolidate then to create a new full. If you use option 3, then you have the advantage of generation/historyand the advantage of it being faster than consolidate. Option2 is kinda in between having neither the full pain nor advantage of either.

Hello all,

Please be aware that estimated time of consolidation process is quite approximate. It is highly dependent on the archives size, number of backups in chain and of course on system resources (processor speed, memory amount, etc.).

If the consolidation takes much time, you can use oracledba's chain2gen application or built-in Acronis features to delete older chains of backups.

I'd also like to thank bodgy, GroverH and oracledba for their help.
