Vss problem with Upgrading 8.0 to 8.1 regular past wkend 10/20/13
This past weekend of 10/18-10/20/13 This happened to me.
SUMMARY- No Ms VSS service after intalling Ms 8.1 Upgrade from the Ms App Store.
SOME DETAILS- VSS cannot start because pointing to a partition that does not have enough free space to
create a Vss snapshot.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT- I need Ms Vss running dependably for Acronis Workstation v11.5 backups so I can
backup my impatient customers total image backup on the fly while I am there onsite with them. Without Ms Vss
running it is a gamble to make a complete backup like this. (In case files change ie. Dropbox). Plus these
customers would never wait 12 minutes for a total backup. They are all bigshots in their opinion. I take
care of the real world of small business (<25 users). This problem/issue is a deal breaker for updating
other computers to 8.1 until figured out. Ability for dependable Acronis total backups is NOT optional.
THE HARDWARE- Toshiba X70 laptop- Intel Core Gen4 2.4ghz, 16gb Ram, 256gb Ssd (168gb free C: partition), 1tb
Hybrid hdd drive. Oem Windows 8.0 (regular NOT pro)
I have setup Cloud services to backup day to day Data. But these total backup opportunities only come every
3 months. I do not want to waste time talking about the importance Ms Vss service running or buying a 3rd party Vss.
WHAT HAPPENNED- Went to the Ms App Store and installed the free 8.1 upgrade. It created a 5th partition of
350mb. All else but Acronis WS v11.5 works fine. And yesy, I ran Windows Updates and latest Acronis WS 11.5 before
doing the upgrade. Even ran a Acronis manual Backup before upgrading with Validation. Ran perfect. The
8.1 upgrade created a 5th partition (system-msr). The original (system-msr) partition from Toshiba is 260mb.
I tried changing options
I have tried to cover all the questions people might ask. Any ideas anyone? Anyone with similar problems? Please post.
I do not think this is specifically a Acronis problem but a failure with Ms upgrade (big surprise huh!). But maybe
you people know a work around. I have not tried Acronis Tech Support yet because they give pre canned answers to
support questions. This is a very fresh (non documented) problem.
I please need some help from the community.

UPDATE 11-3-2013 - After running several backups selecting a different combination of partitions on the drive being backed up- Here are my findings.
If will select all partitions to backup using Vss service EXCEPT that 350mb partition that was created by Ms when you installed the Ms Windows 8.1 update, then
all will be fine.
If you run another backup WITH VSS OPTION TURNED OFF selecting ONLY that new 350mb Ms partition, then all will be fine.
I think it is because the new 350mb partition is Fat32. A link I found about it.

This is not a fix but a work around.

MORE INFO-
1) A full backup using VSS selecting all partitions EXCEPT this 350mb recovery partition created after windows 8.1 upgrade works fine.
2) If you try a backup selecting ONLY the new 350mb partition using VSS it will FAIL due to "insufficient disk space to create VSS snapshot"
3) If you try a backup selecting ONLY the new 350mb partition WITH NO VSS it runs fine.
4) You can TURN OFF VSS and select all partition and the backup will run fine. However this is highly not recommended by Acronis. If a file changes
during the backup you could miss backing up the changes. So if you must do a NO VSS service backup then make sure the computer has not internet
connection or even connected to a Lan.

Barry,
Thank you for your solution, this has been driving me nuts for the past three days.
