ATI 2013 wont recognize Windows 8.1 for bare metal backup
I have ATI 2013 on my Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit laptop. I am wanting to use ATI to clone my HDD to a new SDD. So I burned the current ATI 2013 Build 6514 to a CD and when I boot the CD to do a bare metal backup and use the clone disk option, it does not show my HDD as a source option, it is grayed out. I also tried the backup option, and it only lists my destination disk (SSD) as a source option. I experimentally selected the SSD as the source, and the internal HDD is listed as a destination option, which of course is not what I want.
Why is ATI 2013 not recognizing my Windows 8.1 disk as a source? The forums state that ATI 2013 will still work with Windows 8.1 other than the try-before-you-buy version.
I bought ATI 2013 for my Windows 8 laptop before ATI 2014 was released. I was previously a fan of Norton Ghost, but it no longer supported Windows 8. ATI 2013 did support Windows 8, so why is it broken now for Windows 8.1? When will an update be made available to fix the Windows 8.1 issues?

I was about to purchase a new 480Gb SSD and upgrade my July 2013 purchase of ATI 2013 to ATI 2014 to be able to clone from HDD to SSD. It appears that I would be wasting my money purchasing the upgrade and that I should look for a product that will have a shelf life of slightly longer than 5 months!
Thanks for warning me!

Mary, if you were using a trial version of 2014 cloning will be disabled until the product is activated with a full license.
The issue you are experiencing with the 2013 recovery cd is a result of the last update to build 6514. It broke the rescue media builder resulting in the recovery media becoming incapable of backing up GPT partitions. There is an updated ISO version of the recovery cd that you can download from your account online that should work.
Go to www.acronis.com and click User Login at the top of the page. If you haven't already, click register now to create an account and register your True Image 2013 serial(s). Log in with your email and password. Click My Products and Downloads under My Account in the left pane. Click the + sign next to True Image 2013 (If you have plus pack click that one). After clicking the + a blue box with tabs along the bottom will expand. Click the tab marked Bootable Media and then Download. The description will still say build 6514 due to a limitation in the website, but it is actually a newer build 6528 Recovery Media ISO.

If using the trial version, the backup capability exists only in the Windows installed trial vesion.
The trial recovery CD only has restore capability. The option to clone from the CD or perform a backup when booted from the trial recovery CD is not enabled in the trial version.
Once purchased and activated, then the Recovery CD can be used for and is the preferred restore or cloning method plus an alternate means of performing a backup.

As I stated before, I am a registered user of ATI 2013 and burned a bootable image from the application to try to clone the disk from. I understand that trial editions do not have the clone feature enabled. My problem is that ATI 2013 does not support Windows 8.1 and Acronis is does not seem to want to fix the issue without their users buying the ATI 2014 version. I purchased ATI 2013 in May 2013 and it worked fine for Windows 8.0, but once I upgraded to Windows 8.1, it no longer works. This Microsoft upgrade is comparable to Windows Service Packs, like XP SP3, so Acronis should be providing an upgrade to ATI 2013 since they advertised it as working with all versions of Windows 8.
Joey, I have not tried the Bootable Media you suggested yet, I may have time this weekend to try it. But I have cloned my hard disk to my SSD using a different FREE product so my cloning issue is resolved. I am still using ATI 2013 to backup my computer to a NAS, but I have lost faith in Acronis and do not know if I can trust the backup or not based on how they are handling this issue.
