Errorcode 0x000B03EC: Failed to read data from the disk

Thread needs solution

I had a 1TB hard drive that had 3 partitions on it: C (Windows 7 system), D (data), K (bitlocker encrypted).

There was no 100MB reserved partition.

I decided I wanted to replace the drive with one big 2 TB drive, with only one partition.

So I did an Acronis 2013 full backup of the C drive (in partition mode).

Then I did a restore of the C drive from the backup to the new uninitialized 2 TB drive. I expanded the partition to now be 2 TB.

I then replaced the first 1 TB drive (with the 3 partitions) with the 2 TB (single partition drive).

The system boots fine.

However, now, when I try to do an Acronis backup of the 2 TB drive (in either disk or partition mode) I get :

"Failed to read data from the disk. Failed to read from sector -552,169,122 of hard disk '1''. Try to repeat the operation...use Check Disk Utility, and create a backup of the disk. Failed to read the snapshot manager drive (0x1000D7). Unknown status (0x9). The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (0xFFF0)."

If I then hit "Ignore", I get Failed to read from sector -552,169,121 ... etc.

If I hit "Cancel" the backup then proceeds. However, my scheduled backup will fail without my hitting Cancel.

The error log shows: Cannot find source partition with path '\local\hd_sign(6B1322F3)\part_sn(ACB85E96B8ACB8A4)start(2048)'.

I ran checkdisk, but that didn't help. I bought a new drive and cloned the old drive onto the new drive, and also still get the error. So I don't think it has to do with bad sectors....?

On the Acronis support site, for the error code it says:
"Cause: The partition specified in the task as backup source does not exist.
"Alternatively, the issue can occur if you substituted the disk that was set to be backed up with a cloned disk (e.g. you have set the product to back up disk D:, then you cloned disk D: and put it in the system instead of the original one)."

I created a new backup task for the C drive, but still get the same error.

Anyone have any ideas what is causing this? Could it be that there used to be a bitlocker encrypted partition on the old drive, but now that partition no longer exists, and Acronis is trying to backup something from the lower regions of the disk but it no longer exists?

I have attached screenshots.

I don't want to install a new OS since I have so many programs installed....

Thanks for any help!

EricH,

Did you make a new task to match your new drive layout? Trying to use the old task, even if you just edited it, won't work.

Colin, thanks for your reply.

Yes, I created a new backup task for the C drive, but still get the same error. That was the first thing I did.

I tried both a C: partition backup, as well as an entire DISK backup; same errors....

Any other ideas?

Could it be some region of the MBR and I could try rebuilding the MBR?

When I ran chkdsk, there was something strange:
usn journal verification completed.
Write failure with status 0xc0000185 at offset 0x1d1c0fffe00 for 0x200 bytes.
The second NTFS boot sector is unwriteable.

Could this be related, or just a red herring?

I think it may well be the cause of the problem. Run chkdsk /r which ought to fix it.

My error is similar.
Tried to run a backup. Fails in under 5 seconds every time.
Cannot find source partition with path '\local\hd_sign(B3DB89C8)\part_sn(6CB18A3FF66CB1CE)start(206848)'.

The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later.
This repeats over and over.

Any ideas on what to do next?
Thanks

Leon,

Have you run chkdsk /r and then remade the task?

Performed the following on each drive:
In Computer, selected each drive, right-clicked to Properties, selected Tools, clicked on Check now.
Parameters: Yes to Automatically fix file system errors; No to Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

Should I go back and select that second option?
I ask that because after running the above actions on all 3 disks, same error in under 5 seconds.

Thanks

Leon,

You need to open a command prompt and use checkdisk from there, it is more thorough. Make sure you use the /r option this will fix any sector faults, it will also require a reboot so that it runs before Windows starts all its services if fixing the drive containing the OS.
