How do I restore an image file to another partition on another computer.

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I recently built a new computer and installed a full version of Windows 7. I have one hard drive (hard drive 0) that is 500GB in size total. I currenty have 300GB being used for my Windows 7 O.S. install.

The C:\ partition is 300GB where the Windows 7 install lives and I have 150 GB formatted for NTFS on the D:\ partition which is currently not hosting any O.S.

So I have Acronis True Image Home 2009 installed on my Windows XP pro old computer and I have taken a backup of disk image to an external drive. The total size of my Windows XP drive is 128GB.

So my question is; How do I install the "image" files there are multiple .tib files that Acronis created and put on my external hard drive onto the new partition on my new computer?

Should I install XP on the new partition first, then install Acronis on that..then do restore? Will I be able to install Acronis on the new partition even thought it is installed on my XP workstation?

My final goal would be to make my new computer dual boot so I can have both XP and Win 7 operating systems for a while until I am sure all is compatiable with Win 7.

Thank you for any help..please be patient with this newbie to Acronis

Hello,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help. Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.
There are several reasons that will prevent you from creating a functional dual-boot system.
1) You are unable to restore the archive to a dissimilar hardware by means of Acronis True Image Home 2009. You should use Acronis True Image Home 2010 with Acronis True Image Home 2010 Plus Pack for your purposes.
2) If you want to have Windows XP as a second after Windows 7 operating system, you should use a boot manager that will allow you to select the desired operating system at the computer startup. Our Acronis OS Selector which is a part of Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0 doesn't support Windows 7.
3) Most probably, the operating system that you want to restore was located on the first system partition of your old computer, and you want to restore it to the second partition of your new computer. Anyway, you should change the boot files of the restored operating system.
It looks like the best way is to restore the archive by Acronis True Image Home 2010 with Acronis Plus Pack to the first partition and after that perform a clean install of Windows 7 to the second partition.
Please see this article on how to restore the archive.
If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

Oleg, in above post you wrote about
partition position;
which gives rise to this question:
Is it always is required that
partition image restoration be made to
a partition that is in the
same partition sequence position as
that of the imaged partition?

Hello,

I have a similar question and wanted to refresh this post that I found.

I am using Acronis True Image 2014 and want to restore a backup with operating system created from one computer and restore it to another.

Is this supported with Acronis True Image 2014?

Thank you very much for your help.

Eric

You need what is referred to as Universal Restore which is restoring to dis-similar hardware.

In order to do that, you need to upgrade to the PREMIUM version of 2014.

Here is one link and the help files and as forum search for Universal Restore can provide more information.

http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ATIH2014/index.html#10116…

Universal restore is a feature which is added to the TI2014 Premium Recovery CD which enables the user to add the new drivers whick will be needed for the target computer.
