REFS Format support from ISO Boot
Hi,
I'm running Windows 8.1 x64 Pro. I'm using an external and internal REFS formatted drive. I'm also using Qsync to synchronize my Nas with my regular Acronis backups. Everything works great on the backups. I can backup the system partition, OS Drive, etc. Fulls and Differentials both work well. The speed is also excellent, up between 80-90 MB.sec.
I'm trying to use the REFS drives with the boot recovery iso. I can't get it to see the REFS drives. Any suggestions? Is it not supported? Right now, I'm copying my backup files over to an NTFS Raid partition which is seen at boot. This is for my lab at home. Playtime :)
Anyway, can anyone give me some suggestions. Maybe my searches aren't as good as can be, but I'm finding very little about Acronis 2014 and REFS drives. Is it in a manual?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Paul

Well I finished my restores. I'm going to go into specifics in a separate thread. I can say that Acronis 2014 Premium ISO boot for me, did not work with REFS. All I did was copy my backups to an NTFS partition. I also use something called Qsync which is a pretty new utility that was released for a Qnap NAS on version 4. The tib files must be 50GB or less to use Qnap's feature, but it is a wonderful utility. Very pleased with it.
As far as REFS goes, the restore somehow corrupted my four REFS drives (internal) and my four (external) REFS drives. I had taken precautions anyway so I didn't lose any data. However the fact that my restore did not reference any of the REFS drives makes me kind of scratch my head as to what really happened. I had a pretty simple backup/restore process of my C and E drives. I didn't touch any of the other drives. I have an internal RAID card with drives and that was left untouched. No issues.
If REFS is not supported, Acronis should give the user a stiff warning that only file backups are supported or no backups at all. Haven't done enough research to determine which is true. REFS drives work great for full image backups. They are fast and resilient. Microsoft has come out and said that they are robust as a hardware RAID card. I find it hard to believe but I guess we will see over time.
Bottom line is if anyone wants to use REFS with Windows 8.1 x64, be extremely careful.
My system reports says that the REFS drives received "mount errors."
Oh, I was using REFS drives for something called "Storage Spaces" inside control panel. It's the storage spaces that became corrupt w/o taking a backup or attempting to restore. I ended up just rebuilding my two storage spaces from scratch.

Sorry to hear of your troubles but glad you did take the safe route and not loose any data. I am not 100% certain that Acronis boot medai being Linux based is the problem of your troubles but, I do know that REFS is not officially supported by any existing Linux kernel. REFS backups within Windows would not be a problem using 2014 as it would support REFS. You might find the link below of interest.

Well I think I owe Acronis an apology. Windows 8 said that my four drive storage space structure was corrupt. I upgraded to 8.1 and guess what, everything is back online with no errors. So even though Acronis may not support REFS, the software did not touch my drives.
Also good to know that storage spaces on Windows 8 and 8.1 is quite different.
Thanks everyone,
Paul
