Can't specify backup target(s) (infinite 'loading' message) (WinXP SP3)

Thread needs solution

Brand new installation on WinXP SP3 machine.

Connecting to local machine.

When attempting to set up new backup job/set it would allow me to specify a target (cloud), time parameters, etc. It would not, however, populate the list of drives, folders, etc. on the machine either in disk mode or folder mode.

The disk is 500 GB with 450 GB free. An external USB drive previously used for backups was connected at the time (it's also 500 GB with 450 free).

My theory was that Acronis initially indexes disk/file/folder structure. In order to reduce its task in the present I manually typed a folder to search (c:\windows) in the hope it the 'loading' dialog would end. No luck. I closed Acronis and safely ejected/disconnected the USB drive since a) I don't need a backup of it and b) it doesn't need to be indexed, assuming that's what Acronis is attempting. Unfortunately. this made the problem worse as the next launch of Acronis (after disconnect) left it hanging, unable to connect to the local machine at all.

This is a production PC and I'm doing this remotely so on-demand reboots are not freely available.

Are there diagnostics and/or a list of services that can be examined for necessary operation?

Is my hunch about an extensive, even if one-time, disk indexing process correct?

No.

You may try restarting Acronis Managed Machine service. (corresponding process is mms.exe)

After a reboot I'm getting the 'Acronis Managed Machine Service is unavailable' message at login.

I've done a forum search on this and it appears it's one of your Greatest Hits going back 4-5 years. Promises of panaceas via new builds, etc.

Well, friends, this is a brand new install with the latest version on a machine that's patched (from an MS perspective) and has never hosted an Acronis installation of any kind before.

I'm sure you share my enthusiasm for proving to my client (and your customer) that this is a fixable problem.

Is the service started? What happens if you start it manually, does it crash or just stops?

The service will start manually.

Let's table the obvious question of why it didn't start automatically and return to the main thrust of this thread, which is:

EDIT: I left it in that state for 8.5 hrs. Just checked and it never populated the list of drives/folders etc.

Looks like you have to contact Acronis support with this.
When the disk list still shows 'loading' indicator, create a dump of mms process using procdump (http://kb.acronis.com/content/27931)
procdump -ma mms.exe
and Acronis system information utility report http://kb.acronis.com/content/2707
Do the disks show up in the 'disk management' page in navigation tree?
