Error code 255
I have been running scheduled tasks of my C and D drives for a long time using chain2gen but I have encountered a new problem. On my C backup, I proceeded through set0, set1, set2, then back to set0 without a problem. After a new backup and 2 incrementals in set0, I began to get failures with the notation, "Child process has exited with code 255." Any idea what gives? My D drive is progressing along without a hitch. (I alternate a backup every 2 days on each drive, so one or the other is backing up every night.) I am using Acronis True Image Home (2009, I think).

I am assuming that the task in question has a file in the Pre/Post pre command.
Look at that file to see which one it is. Are you using C2G? Have you made any changes in your configuration? Have you made a restore lately?

Strangely enough, it was attempting the eleventh backup in this series when it first failed. I am using c2g, just as I have for years and the Pre/Post file is Acronis_PreProcessing_task.bat. no changes between the good backup and the failed one and no restores. I guess I'll just start over and see if that solves the problem, I'm just curious as to why it would suddenly stop after almost a month of successful backups.

I think I have discovered the problem. Sometime past (probably on the day the problem occurred) I shrunk my C: drive and added another to that disk. Apparently, I am asking Acronis to append two drives to the backup of one drive causing the error. My stupidity, but I guess now we know what error 255 is. Thanks for your ever present help Grover.

C2G just keeps plugging along. It has no issues. The only issue is when thing change. Any chance your storage disk had a change of letters. If the C2G user parameter files pointed to one path and that path did not exist , it would fail and you would get the 255.
