Can't Delete a Previous Backup from Seagate Central Drive

Thread needs solution

The full backup I can get to/backup to, is located at \\Seagate-xxxxxxx\Public\Tablet PC\Local disk (C)\.

For some reason, the original full backup is located at: \\192.168.1.103\Public\Tablet PC\. When I try to delete this backup (that I can't get to) using the instructions in the User Guide, I get a dialogue box "Edit authentication settings" (not mentioned in the User Guide) which asks me for a user name and password. It doesn't matter what I enter, I get the error message "connection failed". Any guidance on how to remove the original backup at the '192...' location is appreciated. Thanks,

This is the screen from which the deletion should occur. The file should appear on this screen and if you RIGHT click the file info rectangle at the bottom of screen, you should be offered a delete option.

Thanks Grover... unfortunately, I can not get to step 3. I get the dialogue box about 'Edit Authentication Settings' asking me for a user ID and password. I was able to get a message that Version 1 isn't available or was deleted but it still shows up on the backup/recovery screen including the file size (32.22GB). I tried to view the contents of the drive through windows explorer and it doesn't show anything in that location. I was also able to get an error message that drive 'Z' is not accessible. Maybe it's not a big deal but I would like to be able to tell conclusively if what I'm trying to delete is taking up disc space. Thanks for trying. JR

one step which would clear all backup settings so no tasks appear on your desktop is to open Windows Explorer and browse to the the Acronis 'DATABASE" folder and rename or delete the "ARCHIVES.XML" file. It will recreate itself with no old records of past backups.

Should you want to restore the existing backup, you can browse the real location and use the option to "add to backup list" and restore the backup; or boot from the cd and browse to the real location and restore from there. Your delete action of the xml file has no bearing on the existence of the actual backup file.

All working tasks will need to be recreated.

Your device with network address //192.168.1.103 is asking for user authentication to access the file requested. What device on your network uses this address? This could be coming from your router as well. Modern day routers have built in firewalls to restrict access to network devices unless requests can be authenticated. If you set up a user ID and password and know what they are you should try using them. If you did not setup your router that way then by default the router has a built in user ID and password. Look at your router documentation or check the manufacturer website support pages for your model and you should be able to determine these default values. Give them a try.

Delete your existing task in ATI
Go to the user & account panel, look for the Windows credentials manager, and delete any stored credential for your NAS.
Delete the current connections in Windows: from a command prompt, type net use * /delete
Restart the computer
Access your shares from Windows explorer. If you can open and add/delete files to the share you want to store your backup into, move on to the next step. Otherwise modify the access rights to the share in the NAS UI.
Create a new task in ATI using the same credentials you typically use to access your NAS shares as a user. Recreate your backup.
Verify if the problem subsists.

Note: Windows SMB doesn't allow 2 set of credentials to access the same share for one Windows user. ATI stores credentials and access the NAS separately, but to debug your situation, I would make sure that the credentials in Windows are the same as in ATI. After this is established, and if it is necessary, you will be able to try a different set of credentials for ATI.

I was having similar problems. Could not erase older bachups, even with some of the work arounds presented here. Therefore, I deleted Acronis, moved some saved files from my external backup drive, reformatted the backup drive, and reinstalled Acronis. Then set the new installation to the previous backup scheme. I'm now waiting until 6:00 pm, when my backups occur daily. Full then three incrementals. It is set to back up three backups then delete the oldest, always keeping three complete backups. I hope this works and Acronis teams are monitoring this forum. Most of the problems encountered, in reading many posts, are created by Acronis, not the user.

Just to clarify,
Hopefully, you used this as your example but changed the keep 6 inc to keep 3 so a full backup will occur after each 4th backup (1 full + 3 inc) according to your preferences. Also that you changed the keep 4 chains to the keep 3 chains you indicated as yor preference. So the setting of full after 3 inc and keep 3 chains , deletion of old backups will occur immedialtely following the 4th full (backup #13) at which time chain 1 of the first 4 backups (1 full plus 3 inc) will be deleted.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. 6 Inc, Keep 4
