Snapshot created, but not deleted

Thread needs solution

I have a particular VM where vmProtect creates a snapshot as part of the backup process, but never deletes it. The log says that removing the snapshot was "Successful" when it was not. As a result, I have a very long series of snapshots on this VM.

When I try to delete the snapshot in vmWare with the shapshot manager, I get a fault.SystemError.summary error with no details.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue short of completely rebuilding the VM from scratch?

Hi Jim,

After the backup completes vmProtect sends request to remove the snapshot, so in your case this request is sent and is received successfully, however the snapshot removal process itself fails. This process is entirely handled on VMware side (as well as snapshot creation one), i.e. we only call the API which removes/creates the snapshot, but do not get involved into the process itself.

In your case I'd recommended to check whether you can create (quiesced snapshot without memory)/remove the snapshot from the vSphere client and if it fails then contact VMware support to see what's the problem is with that particular VM.

As a workaround you can try restoring the VM from the backup as a new one (this will generate a new VM from scratch) and check how snapshot creation/removal process works with it. It is likely that the restored VM won't be affected by the issue.

Thank you.

When restoring VM from a backup, how long does it typically take please? I mean the whole process?
