Uninstalled ATI from Vista, now won't boot

Thread needs solution

Everytime I booted windows, I was receiving an error that ATI Monitor had quit. So I decided to uninstall ATI and start over. After uninstall, I was prompted to restart the computer. Now Windows won't boot. Any ideas?

Search for left ATI items on your computer.
Yuse regedit, windows explorer.
Take a good and narrow look at all items.
Remove whatever ATI item you recognise.
There is also a tool on the acronis site for removing left items.

Yes - if only I could get to windows explorer. I've tried booting from the Dell OEM windows cd and also from my ATI bootable recovery cd, but no luck. All I ever get is the black "Windows Startup Recovery" screen with 2 options - to Launch Startup Repair (which it won't do) or to Start Windows Normally. When i click either option it just goes right back to the same black screen

Hello all,

Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response. I'll do my best to assist you with the issue.

FB Jeunhomme thank you for the help.

Tamara, first of all please be aware that Acronis True Image 10 Home is not compatible with Windows Vista. Most probably, that incompatibility caused the issue you faced. However, Acronis True Image 2009/2010 fully supports Windows Vista.

Step 1: Please try to restore MBR (Master Boot Record) of your computer the following way:

Boot from Windows Vista installation disc, select language and keyboard or input method, click Next and choose to Repair your computer. Then you will need to select the operating system that you want to repair. In the System Recovery Options dialog box click Command Prompt and type the following:

  • Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
  • Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
  • Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

After that, please exit Command Prompt (type in exit), reboot your machine and check if the issue still persists. If so, please proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Please boot up to Safe Mode (press F8 during the boot process) and choose Safe Mode with networking. Then please download a special Acronis Clean Utility that will remove all traces of Acronis software from your system and run it. Please disregard all requests about additional components. When the process finishes, please reboot and see if you're able to boot into Windows.

Additionally, you've mentioned that you've had some issues with Acronis bootable CD. Could you please clarify what happened exactly?

Please let me know if the issue is not resolved or you have any additional questions, I'll be glad to help.

Thank you.

Thank you Ilya. I was able to get Windows booted that night. It was evidently a two-step process. I had to use the Windows Vista boot disc twice before it finally fixed the boot process. The first time it fixed an error, but still wouldn't boot. After using it again it fixed another error, and I was able to go back to a restore point before ATI was uninstalled.

As to your question about the ATI boot disc - when I tried to use it, I was immediately redirected to the Windows can't boot screen - probably because I had already uninstalled ATI.

ATI 10 home isn't compatible? That's what Acronis was selling for Windows Vista when I first bought my laptop. I originally had version 6, but upgraded to their latest when I bought my laptop with Vista. Oh well!! I have been able to run backup with it - just this "ATI monitor has stopped working" problem that started a couple months ago. I'm not sure why this "Monitor" runs all the time anyway.

Thanks for the help :)

Hello all,

I'm really sorry for misleading you, the latest build of Acronis True Image 10 Home supports Windows Vista.

Thank you.
