Restore has message about partition which doesn't seem to exist
True Image 9.0 build 3667, Windows XP Home SP3, System hard drive C: 75GB
I did a full back up in October 2009, and several incremental backups since (the most recent being about a week ago). I tried to restore to the October backup, and got a message something to the effect that the backup would clear a partition which might contain data. Although I could find no evidence that there is a partition other than the main partition, I was spooked. So I decided to use the file restoration and restore all of the files. Shortly into that process I started getting messages that TI was unable to open or restore or something a file, with the option to try again, ignore, or cancel. Try again would always result in the same message. Cancel caused the process to abort and so I had to start all over again. Ignore caused it to proceed until it came to another such file. I ignored many many files. I decided that this wasn't going well, so I decided to restore to the most recent backup, again restoring all of the files. I ended up ignoring probably hundreds of files.
When the process finally ended, my C: drive was almost full, and it had a lot of files which had a strange appendage of the form "~AAAA". There was also a corresponding file with the usual name. for example, text.txt and text.txt~ABCD.
The computer ran OK, except that it seemed to have lost the Norton Internet Security 2010 application. With the help of the folks at Norton, the security application is now working.
QUESTIONS:
1. Can I delete all of the files that have the peculiar appendage. (I will search for them using the search term "*.???~*").
2. What was I supposed to have done in order to correctly restore my disk? I can find no evidence of any other partition of C: except the main partition. Restoring all of the files was obviously not such a hot idea!
Thanks for your help!
Dave
