Thread needs solution

Hi,
I have ATIH 2011. The hard drive on my current laptop is failing. I have been using ATIH to back up my main Windows partition every night, minus a couple of huge folder with just videos. I need to get a new hard drive today, because this laptop keeps freezing up. My ATIH backup files are on a networked hard drive.

Will I be able to install my new hard drive on this laptop, boot using recovery disk, and then restore that partition to the new hard drive? After that, should my laptop just be able to boot up like it did before the failure? Seems like every time I do something on a computer, it takes 10 times longer than it should. Just trying to hear from anyone with tips, as this is my home business computer. I thought I was being good by backing up partitions, but I never really looked to make sure this was all I need to do.

Also, if I might run into a problem doing it this way, should I try to do a cloning or something? This laptop still runs for awhile until it eventually freezes. I tested the hard drive with WD diagnostics and it's definitely failing.

On this HP, I have everything on this C: drive..it's my OS partition and has all my data. There is a D: partition which has HP's recovery stuff on it. I never backed that up...should i?

Thank you so much

Yes, you would be best served to make a backup which includes all your partitions on the failing disk. I can't give you specfic instructions for 2011 but the optioin does exist on that versionn to perform a disk optiion backup. It could be similar to my signature link 2-A below. The first parts of link 2-A shows how to do a disk option backup in 2014 which should be similar.

At the very least, I wold suggest that you boot from the user created TI Recovery CD and perform a backup when booted from the CD.
The GH50 link would be applicable in creating a backup of all partitions; likewise, GH51 shows how to do a disk option restore from the CD.

GH50. CD Disk option backup.
GH51. CD Disk option restore.

A restore to a new disk should enable the new disk to be bootable. My signature link 3 below and item 2 inside that link can provide more details about restoring to a new disk.
