Cloning disk in Windows 8

Thread needs solution

I have an HP Pavilion p6-2420t desktop that I want to clone the hard disk on. I've turned off Secure Boot and enabled Legacy mode in the BIOS but when I tried to clone the disk, everything looks fine and then it reboots. When it reboots, a message appears that says it's starting Acronis UEFI but it just hangs at that point and doesn't proceed.

I've read that one can't use the clone feature directly; something about using the recovery disc in order to clone the original hard drive. How do I go about this; I need a step-by-step procedure as to how to create this CD and what do I do to clone the hard drive. (Do I boot from the recovery CD and run the cloning from there?) I'm using build 6514 and it works fine on my Windows 7 computer but not on the Windows 8 computer.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I was finally able to get the recovery CD created properly (forgot to check the box that automatically starts it in xx seconds... left it at the default 10 seconds and it worked AFTER I disabled the UEFI system in the BIOS. It took awhile for the program to load after the CD booted but I was able to successfully clone the hard disk. Now, I have to replace the original disk with the cloned one and see if it will boot properly in Win8; I suspect it will and will post a message here if I run into a problem. Thanks to all!

Any surprises Gary, or did that do the trick?

I have an HP with 8.1 pro and Acronis 2014 came with my Crucial SSD I just picked up. I was able to use it without issue for 4 other systems (win 7 pro), but with this computer, it just goes to a blank screen (and stays there) after verifying that I understand a restart will be needed.

Yes - I was aware of that, but was trying to find someone who was in the "closest boat" to my own.

Unfortunately I was not able to coax the free version of Acronis (which came with the 512GB Crucial SSD I just purchased) into working with my Win 8.1 pro system. A few weeks prior I was able to do this flawlessly with four different Win 7 Pro systems.

I tried removing the secure boot feature - and was able to then launch Acronis from a USB, but that clone attempt failed as well.

I've spent MUCH too much time fooling around with this and researching - so in the end I purchased Marcium Reflect which, as I type this, has completed 30% of the cloning process... whereas I couldn't even get Acronis to start the process.
