Odd Issue when cloning a Hard Disk
I have been using Acronis True Image Home to create
"hot clones" of my Hard Disk as follows:
1. I take an OLD back-up and mount it in the ultra-bay of my laptop while
Windows 7 Professional is up and running.
2. I use the "administrative services / disk management" to DELETE the Volume
that is on the drive that is in the Ultra-bay. At this point, I have an "unallocated Drive"
3. I remove the "unallocated Drive" and shut down the Windows OS.
4. After doing that, I "re-mount" the "unallocated Drive" in the ultra-bay of the
[now] powered off laptop.
5. I take a USB "drive" that has Acronis True Image Home 2014 ("ISO Image")
and put that into a USB Slot.
6. I power up the laptop and specify that the Boot sequence is off of the USB
Drive.
7. Acronis 2014 comes up.
8. I specify "Tools" and "clone drive" and create a "hot clone" of my "C Drive"
9. I specify "shut down when finished" and remove the "hot clone" after the latop
powers off.
10. I test the clone to make sure that it boots up...
This has ALWAYS worked..... until two nights ago....
when after cloning, my "clone" would NOT boot up ("disk read error")
even though when I mounted it in the ultra-bay I could see that the files had all been copied...
This was clearly very distressing...
It TURNS OUT that there was a SINGLE factor that apparently made the difference....
Normally, as noted above, I "de-allocate" the old back-up ON THE SAME LAPTOP where I am going
to do the cloning.....
However, two nights ago, I did the "de-allocate" on a DIFFERENT LAPTOP....
I then took the "unallocated Drive" and now ran the cloning the "original" laptop....
THAT is when I had this problem....
I found, however, that when I took the "bad" clone and performed Step 2 above on the SAME
laptop where I would then do the clone process -- EVERYTHING now worked...!!
Not sure why this is so... but thought that I would call it to people's attention....
