About recovering free space on the backup drive

Thread needs solution

Hi everyone,

Please, I’ve two questions:
1)To save my system running under Win 8.1 OS, I use Acronis TI 2015, and I store backups on drive H, an External HD (2TB). Two days ago, a full backup of my system seems to have been made (See Table below). After that, it remains very little space on H (say 90Mo). So, I would like to make free space.
Can I, without any problem, remove the former nine files?
That's to say, from the file: _full_b3_s1_v1.tib to the file: _inc_b2_s6_v1.tib?
2) If so, is there a special procedure to achieve these deletions or may I remove, as I usually do for any DD file?
If I have to use a special procedure, would you please teach me!

Thank you for your help, I’m waiting for...

Have a nice day.
Gerard.

Sorry if I'm in the wrong place, it the first time I try to use a Forum

Hi there,

In your case, you have 2 chains (a chain is comprised of one full backup and incrementals "based on" that full): b3 files and b2 files.
In the backup settings, you should set the backup scheme to create one new full after 6 incrementals, and turn on automatic cleanup to keep only 1 most recent backup chain. With that scheme, ATI will produce one full, then 6 incrementals. Then the next time it runs, it will create a new full and delete the first chain entirely. Of course the downside of this is that after it has deleted the previous chain, your only backup history is the most recent full. An alternative to avoid this problem is to choose consolidation, but I recommend against it strongly because consolidating backup files is a complex and long operation prone to errors.

Note that one of your b3 full backup has a -2 at the end this means that one of the b3 full is useless. Personally, I would be suspicious of the integrity of the backup.

Since you have to modify the backup scheme, delete the entire task and set it up the way you want, instead of modifying the existing task.

While modifying tasks is supported, it often leads to unexpected results and confusion by the user.

Hi Pat,

Many thanks for answering to my first use of a forum.
Thank you also for your suggestions, just I’m not sure to understand what I have to do.

Three points:

1) I haven’t interpreted _v1-2.tib as a bad file, for me, it was only to indicate, for history, that this file was the second full save!
2) Please let me know if I’m right: After changing the backup scheme, I think in the way given by in attached files, or, please, suggest me other better options. I’ve had to erase all the eleven files within the folder named “Sauvegardes Acronis”. In fact, I haven’t seen that the 10th one, was also an incremental file.
3) For me, in order to be completely secure, I think that I have to force a full PC save which would be the first in the folder, waiting for a new incremental file.
4)
Please, let me know if it seems correct for you.

Have a nice day,

Gérard.

Sorry, The attachement seems not to be sent!
I'll be tried once more.

Start over fresh with new backup tasks. Use the below as an example but with your own numbers.
This example will set up automatic cleanup so the program will do its own deletion of old backkups when created by this new task.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Hi GroverH,
Many thanks for your answer, you have made a very nice work.
I think that I have to dedicate an HD say X: for example (2To) and use incremental work, with 2 chains including a full PC save and four incremental files.
However, my problem seems to be the seize of the full file which is around 900Mo! Maybe would be better to use a greater external HD (3To)?
What did you think about this proposition?
If I do that, I believe that I have to force the first full save file, do you agree?
Once more, you did a great synthetic work... Thanks!
Gérard

Yes. A 3TB should provide enough room for the first chain (full + 4 inc) plus the next full before the deletion then occurs of the oldest chain .

OK, thanks, I've just to buy one...
