Too many incrementals although the backup is set to create a full after 5 incrementals

Thread needs solution

I have a backup scheme, standard incremental set to create a full after 5 incrementals. I now have 8 incrementals in the chain. Is this a known issue?

any chance you may have edited or made changes so the "full after 5 inc" is not the original?
If yes, it masy take a few inc for the cleanup (if any) to begin.

I discourage any editing to the initial post. Rarely does the changes turn out as expected. My recommendation is that any time a task needs changes, stop using it and start a new task with the new settings. New task name and new storage folder.

My suggestion would be to stop using the existing chain and create a new chain.
My suggestion is to change to a custom scheme as per below and set a specific cleanup plan. None is set in your current setting. Cleanup is not enabled on your current plan. I interpret your current plan settings to be an endless series of chains--each chain being 6 files until the disk fills up.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever Inc or store number best fits your needs.

Many thanks for your suggestions, I will set up a custom scheme to include clean up as you recommend. I don't recall having changed the default options but I suppose it could have happened. You're correct in that if the scheme were to execute according to how it is allegedly set up then I would expect a series of chains, 1F+5I. As it happens I have 1F and 8I at the moment and I don't like the long chain of incrementals. I'll change the scheme.

Thank you once again
