How to install a backup external drive

Thread needs solution

I have an HP laptop with a 1TB WD hard drive and an external USB 4TB WD hard drive. I'm using Acronis 2015. My primary drive failed on my laptop so I changed it out and reinstalled Windows 7. When I plugged in my 4TB external hard drive I could see all the files loading on my machine. I was able to access everything until I rebooted my laptop and now I'm stuck. The laptop keep telling me to unplug any devices and reboot but that doesn't work. Tried safe mode but that doesn't work either. used my disc as a recovery disc but that doesn't work either. What did I do wrong?

Thanks

Can you please describe what you did? Did you do a backup of your content to the USB disk prior to the failure? What kind of backup was it, disk/partition, file?
When you say "I could see all the files loading on my machine", I don't understand...

Hi

yes...I did a backup to the 4TB USB drive but not sure if it was a disk or partition. All I know is I had it set to grab any new data I created at 1am every morning. So, After I rebuilt the laptop I figured I could just plug it in and read the data. That wasn't the case so now I'm extremely gun shy and want to be sure to get it right after having to rebuild the entire laptop again

Thanks for your help
