Recover PC Requires I First Select Recover Files

Thread needs solution

True Image 2015 Build 6613

Failed to open item D:\folder name\Sub-folder\file name

The knowledge base indicates this is a known issue but there is no fix at this time.
Event code:0x00640BEA+0x0064023C=0x00AC0041+0x00AC0040+0x01AF0006+0x01AF0C

I run daily full backups that are saved into the same folder with different daily sub-folders as in the example above. They are located on a 4TB WD Elements drive for my desktop and I do the same for my laptop which saves to a separate 4TB WD elements drive. Two separate machines, separate external USB 3.0 drives, same issue. On any given day, I delete the previous backup for that day using Windows Explorer which I suspect might be causing a conflict with the TI database.

Work around, I must first select "Recover files" as opposed to "Recover PC." This allows me to browse to the specific backup after which I can then use "Recover PC."

I had not needed to use "Recovery" but discovered this problem by accident over a recent issue and then tested all my backups in the list, both machines, and found the issue existed for all my images.

I have considered deleting the backup image within TI but that would require me to create new backups each time as opposed to using the template I've created for each day. I haven't tested if this would work but if this is an Explorer conflict with the TI database it seems logical but inconvenient given I've always used this method with TI in the past.

Images were all validated during creation and once discovering the issue, I ran validation a second time, all images, both machines and there were no issues.

Beginning with the 2012 (give or take a year), Acronis started using a history file and EVERYTHING is tracked. Now, if you delete a file manuallyl, it is aware and has difficulty adjusting and sometimes cannot adjust. Acroinis provides no means of deleting a continuing backup. Once you have performed a manual deletion of an active task, the program is out of sync and gives off messages such a "cannot find version ????".
One step you can take to help following a deletion is to begin a validation and respond "ignore" each time you get the error prompt so you may have to respond ignore several times. Once you have responded to the error prompts, often times (not always) you can continue to use the task. Your finding the "REcover files" may be another method of updating the history files just like the validation does.

I would strongly encourage you to set up new tasks using the automatic cleanup. Using this method, will keep the history file in sync and the deletion will be done by the program. Using automtic cleanup provides for you to set your quota of how many backup CHAINS you wish to keep and the program will delete the oldest chain after your goal and been reached and then exceeded. Basically, its like an escalator. The escalator is full. A new backup gets added at the bottom and the oldest gets dropped off at the top.

Examples GH 11, GH12, GH13 are examples of automatic cleanup backup schemes.

------------------------------------------------

Depending upon the type of backup scheme you wish to create, here is an example of each type. These can be set up for Disk image, or Partiton, or Files-folders backups. These example show how to set up automatic cleanup so the program will do the deletion after it reaches your set goal of how many chains to retain.

Editing an existing task is not recommended. Rarely does an edited task perform to user expectations. It is usually better to start with a new task using a new non-identical task name and point to a new storage sub-folder so each task has it own storage folder/sub-folder. Old task can be stopped or deleted from the task listings.

GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup....Store/Keep 4 versions (chains). Use whatever number best fits the individual needs..

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 2 Diff per chain. Store/Keep 2 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Thank you so much for your detailed response. Before I moved to TI 2015, my last version was 2010 in which this was not an issue, nor for versions prior to that either and as you mention, much has changed since then. I finally moved up because 2010 would no longer function reliably past Windows 7.

I had already begun setting up new tasks as of the time of my post but still learning this version I began creating new tasks each day and deleting the ones they replaced within TI and these images did not have the same problems as the others which is completely in sync with your informative response. However, obviously, it required me to repeat my steps each day rather than using a template that would simply provide me a new image and replace the old.

Per your suggestion, I will begin working with automatic clean up. Rather than editing tasks or having to repeat my steps each day, this might allow me to create a template for each day, usually Monday thru Friday, without editing and simply let True Image delete the image the new one is replacing.

Thanks again for your informative response and links it's greatly appreciated.

Each task has the option to "clone settings" so any of the tasks can be "clone settings" and then you just need to make whatever changes needed in the clone for it to be new task. The cloned task will have a (1) as the beginning part of the task name.
Change the clone name and its folder destination so task name and folder destination is not duplicated.
Whatever name you assign or agree to for the task name will be the name of the actual backup file.
