Restore Question: Old Windows; Recent Data

Thread needs solution

I am running True Image 2015, build 6613 and Windows 8.1 Pro. My main computer has been acting up of late and crashing frequently. While trying to upgrade to Windows 10, I got an error message that a system kernel file is corrupt or missing. I have tried to perform a repair installation of Windows 8.1 but it fails every time.

I have backups for the computer going back about 90 days. I would like to reinstall the oldest backup of Windows in the hopes of restoring the corrupt file(s). However, I don't want to lose my recent work and emails. Most of my work files are stored on separate drives (C: drive is an SSD) but my emails are on C: with the Windows files.

How would you suggest I proceed from here?

You do not indicate what program you use for your emails. If it is Outlook, you can copy the *.pst and *.ost files to another disk and then import them when you have 'installed' the backup. You could also 'recover' these files from you most recent successful Win 8.1 backup.

Are you updated to Win 10 using the installation media or via Windows Update? I have found that updating is more reliable when using the Win 10 installation media.

I use Thunderbird for my emails. In the meantime, I decided that I had essentially all of my data on the spindle drives and that my emails were on IMAP servers and so I could probably try to restore only the C: drive. However, the results have not been good. The True Image restore went all right, but apparently my oldest backup is also corrupted. I still have the frequent crashes, and when I tried a repair installation of W8.1 (after crashing three times) I got the error message, "We were unable to install Windows 8.1".

I'm thinking that I may have to do a reset and a clean install of Windows 8.1. I should be able to restore the spindle drives from the Acronis backup, but I'm not looking forward to having to reconfigure the settings on the C: drive...it took me a couple of days to get everything the way I wanted it the first time. Any suggestions that might make it easier?
