recovering the system from backup stored on a different window machine (like a window server)

Thread needs solution

I have been cretaing backups on a separate windows machine in my Home netwrok. Today I tried to see if I could recover from it if the case arises. I created an Acronis TI 2016 bootable CD

I boot from the CD , but I cannot browse to my BACKUP directory. It is not visible.

Well my backup are actually stored on a USB drive. So my solution would be to phically move that USB drive to the LAPTOP I wantto recover. I was wandering if thereis another way

The standard ATIH 2016 rescue boot CD media is based on Linux and may not recognise your network card, especially if you are using WiFi rather than a standard Ethernet adapter.

Building the WinPE rescue media is a better bet for having network device driver support as the Windows ADK used by WinPE provides a much wider range of device support, plus with the WinPE media, you also have the option to be able to add in your own device drivers should the standard WinPE media not have this.

See http://forum.acronis.com/forum/100770 for detailed information on WinPE rescue media and adding device drivers.

The other check here is that you can see your Backup directory on your system from within Windows Explorer as a network share, or at least see the system that is hosting the Backup directory.

You also won't be able to browse to the drive like you would in Windows. Try connecting to the share by computer name or IP... Example:

\\192.168.1.100\

Use the other systems IP though. moments after you should get prompted for credentials. If this is a workgroup, you may have to use the domain.  (computername/) and the account you normally access it with to authenticate and then should be able to navigate and browse.

This assume your network card is working, and if not, the WinPE is the way to go. Or, get a generic sub 3.0 to Ethernet adapter and that will take care of network issue for that machine.
