HDD to Sdd

Thread needs solution

I have and older desktop (Dell XPS) the hard drive must be getting to the end of its useful life due to age. I want to install an SDD. If I clone the old HDD and move it to the SDD will the SDD be bootable when the clone is done? I'm assuming the BIOS will show the new drive. I intend to leave the old drive in the machine but want to bootr from the SDD.

Yes, the clone should work and be bootable.  However, you cannot leave the old drive connected during boot as they will both have the same hardware ID and confuse the bios and that could leave both drives unbootable as a result.

The steps are to take out the original, put the new SSD in the same position and connector as the original. Then attach the original as an external drive (like with a USB 3 connector).  Clone from the UsB adapter to the SSD.  Once the clone is complete, remove  the original drive so that it is in no way connected. Boot the system with the cloned drive only.  Assuming it boots (which it should) you now have a newly working SSD exactly like the old disk.  Only connect the old disk after Windows is booted in the new machine if you need to get data off of it.  Otherwise, format the drive and use for storage, or put the original drive in a safe place just in case you ever need to return to it as bootable drive down the road.

Long story short, after your clone, don't connect both drives at the same time and try to boot or you may have a lot of trouble.
