failed to boot from USB Drive having restored image of original C Drive

Thread needs solution

I am using a Compaq Presario Laptop under XP which recently has given warnings about possible HDD failure . So I decided to make a backup of C with the system to an external USB Drive ( Disk 2 ) using Acronis TI v10 just in case C crashed. Just to make sure the image was OK ( TI reported ok on the backup ) I carried out a restore of this image on Disk 2 to another external USB Drive ( Disk 3 ) including track 0 and MBR

I now assume I should be able to boot from this disk (3) but when trying, it starts up, then shows the XP Windows logo then a blue screen flashes up ( which I captured by video ! ) which says:
"A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer"....
then (in short):
Check for viruses .... remove any newly installed hard drives or controllers ... check your HDD to make sure it is properly configured .......

Technical information (starts with) *** STOP: 0x0000007 .......

Does anyone recognise these problems and if so can send me a solution ?

Many Thanks

Roger

Well if that is the case that would explain my problem - so I have so easy way of testing the image works - I don't want to start messing with the internal HDD unless I have to ? Thanks

The standard advice is to do a test restore to a "spare" drive, which is easy enough to do with a desktop system. As I don't have a laptop, I can't say what the best way to do a test restore is - maybe someone experienced in this could advise. I wouldn't mess with the internal HDD for "testing", unless you experience a failure, of course. Make sure the image validates while running under bootable media (rescue CD), since this is how any restore would be done.
